Year's End Contest - Return of the Choose Your Own Prompt Contest

Deadline: January 3, 2020 at 11:59 P.M. eastern time.

Entry Fee: 100 Points

Minimum entries required: Five valid entries or contest is moot.

Basic Rewards: 25 Points (entry fee returned + 25 points) for successfully submitting a story that achieves a minimum of 4.00/8.00 rating.

Additional Rewards: 100 Points for 1st Place; 50 Points for 2nd Place; 25 Points for 3rd Place

Restrictions: No co-authors. No recycled stories.

Format:

CYOA Fake News Requirement: Post a thread in the Writing Workshop and update twice a week on your progress.

Note: The entry fee is high to discourage people from taking prompts they don't intend to finish. Don't be an ass. If you take a prompt, finish it. Because someone else may very well have wanted that prompt.

That’s the spirit. Confirmed.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

As an added motivation: If you can finish a story in a month despite the busier schedule and limited computer time you have now, you'll know that you'll be able to keep on writing while holding down a job and all the other adult things. Many members don't survive that transition so it is something worth proving. In other words, don't be an Ebon.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Okay I have to complete this story now, no one wants to be an Ebon.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

9) A romantic winter horror genre splice.

I like this prompt a lot.  Let's do it.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Does "no recycled stories" mean that you can't use one that was already published? Or that you have to start a new one now? I have a big game I am working on and it might fit one of the themes so I was wondering if I could pick that and use the game. I am not opposed to starting a new game from scratch if that is what we are supposed to be doing.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Pretty sure the rule is starting from scratch, no games you've been working on beforehand.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

I will go with that, thank you Chris.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

What he said.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

12) The protagonist is an anti-villain. everything else is up to you.

Claiming the role regardless, but is my understanding correct that this is a Villian because he has evil goals, while his methods are generally good. Like I want to take over the city for my own dievious purposes so I am going to systematically take out all the other criminals and appear like a "hero" despite my intentions.

I am choosing this to challenge myself.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Uh, Shadow, did you see the instructions? E) FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, CHECK TO SEE IF SOMEONE TOOK THE PROMPT YOU WANT FIRST.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Goddamnit Bucky, your post is all fucked up when going in to update it. Now I have to completely manually edit the whole thing so it isn't a mess.

Fuck your contest, fuck your timing with these contests and most importantly fuck you.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

ACKSHUALLY, it's the RTE's fault. It's easier for me to just edit it. Were you trying to mark out the taken ones or what? Actually, Bucky should've just made a second post for people to reply to so that he could keep the OP clear and edit it himself, fuck him, you're right.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

I did the first bit of cleaning it up. I was about to cross out the ones taken and write the names next to them, but if you want to do that and keep track of the entry fees, go ahead.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

You have far more faith in people following a complicated instruction like that than me.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Weird. I just typed the prompts normally and copy pasted the instructions from the last prompt contest from two years ago.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

End uses the RTE and you don't, so the post doesn't know what to do and just kind of explodes when he tries to edit it.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

When did he start using that? He was the first person to tell me it sucked back in the day.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

I've always used the RTE on the forums. It's just easier.

I turn it off for story writing and then just turn it back on after publishing it.

I've explained this like a billion times.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Ah, I didn’t know you turned it back on for the forums.

Well, with one billion and one, I’ll remember now.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

I was forced into this. 24) The supervolcano beneath Yellowstone exploded three years ago, and the earth has begun to slip into a new ice age. You really wish you didn't live in Siberia. Technology may be contemporary or futuristic.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

So I am supposed to fake a development thread twice a week? What is the point of fake a development thread about a game nobody give a shit about?  Should be better than i pass that time writing the game?

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

It’s a joke. Technically it’s a “requirement” because it keeps people focused on their story and allows for community engagement. But we’ve never enforced it. End just claims the souls at the deadline.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

She's upset at having to spend thirty seconds twice a week updating a thread. That's an entire minute that could otherwise go into writing the game.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

However, none of that will be happening, but I'll PM something soon.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

The pit is practically a time honored tradition here now. Ah, the changing of the guard.

Lopz66 has #29 - talking bear.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

This is a minor point, but I think it's worth noting. For those of you who take the time to get rid of those stupid double spaces between paragraphs in your story (easiest way I know of is to have RTE off when copy pasting your stories into the editor), I'll consider that a marginal improvement over a story of comparable quality that has those goofy wide spaces.

I think most people will agree that the single spacing is much more aesthetically pleasing and easier to read.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

I can't I have no pc only a phone. And I don't think logic that the fact of having a pc that allows a better spacing is a reason to give a better score.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

If you're typing directly into the editor, you can avoid those goofy spaces by having the RTE turned off. And yes, you can turn the RTE off while on mobile.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

What is rte?

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

It's the Rich Text Editor. You can turn it on/off by going to: My Stuff -> Profile -> and toggling the RTE Box under Preferences.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Hmm, even turning it off doesn't seem to get rid of the spaces when I paste it in.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

You pasting from Word? I'd advise turning off smart quotations (or whatever the bent ones are called) as I recall having trouble with that.

However, for spaces, I find that I am losing space rather than gaining it, in regards to the paragraph breaks, so it might not be Word...

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

If RTE is off and you’re still having issues, don’t stress about it. Your time is better spent on the quality of the story itself. I really don’t have any idea what the issue might be, but I assume it has to be a setting from your writing software. Maybe Mizal or Brad or Ford could help.

30) For the bold - a story that will make Mizal cry.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Hint: You probably want to go with laughter tears.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

I pity you, you poor fool .

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Easier Mizal than me or End.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

So what would happen to the contestant failed to make Mizal cry, would they get shamed or what not?

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Well, I plan on asking Mizal if the story makes her cry or not. In the highly unlikely situation that it does, the story will get a huge boost on my rating card because it will have succeeded in making the desired impact on it's (very narrow) audience.

But so long as it goes along the lines of scoring emotional points or so funny you want to cry - it will hinge on how entertaining the story is and how well it's written.

I don't think anyone has ever set out a rubric for judging criteria here - my position has always been fiction writing is too subjective for a set-in-stone rubric. Each judge - and I don't know who will be judging yet - will make their decision based on what's most important, and how they weigh different aspects of the story, to them. That's a good representation of how a general audience will judge stories.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

I agree with you on that. And is true most with each person a different theme.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

What I'm hearing is Puns are a must, and it must be inferred that someone's mom is getting it. That is if this poor slob has any hope of making Mizal cry.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Well, you already published it, so I guess that's your entry. It also appears to have pages without text or links, so the evil Mizal will eventually get around to unpublishing it for failure to meet minimum site standards.

So what to do? I suppose you can unpublish the story yourself before Mizal gets around to it. Then we can pretend this never happened, and you can spend the rest of the contest period working on the story to make it complete and submit a valid entry. Or I imagine you could just throw in the towel now. I really hope you chose the first option though.

I also strongly encourage you to take a look at some of the featured stories on the site, spend some time in the Writing Workshop, and read the writing articles in the Help & Info section. You have a great opportunity to learn a lot about writing - seize it. A good story can't really be written in a day. Writing is a process, and it takes time.

Best of luck.

You can set stories to "sneak peek" which doesn't publish them, but allows others to see them. Or create a thread for your story in the Writing Workshop and you can talk about it/ask questions/get feedback there.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Why did you say 'Done', as if you had followed his advice instead of sitting there for twenty minutes repeatedly rating your own broken game?

As far as I'm concerned you've already disqualified yourself. I guess good thing you also proved you'd never have been able to meet minimum standards anyway, if you want to look on the bright side....

It's Bucky's contest however so if he wants to keep you in it to see what you do next out of morbid curiosity or whatever, that's his call. But it's looking less and less likely you'll be able to hang onto your account that long either way.

That is a lot of eights for a very not eight story ...

Well, I was actually wondering if you would overrule me with your wizard powers. Just for the record, I would have been fine with that. But I've gotten soft in my old age, and I think the contests are a great way to really help people find ways to improve their craft. This is an opportunity to learn! Or something ... So I'm fine with giving a kid a second chance to prove us wrong. (Yes - us. My hopes are high, but my expectations do not fly as well.)

Should I go with the classic 'lol, fag' here, or the trending 'ok boomer?'

So many questions.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Well, I don't really see Greta from Sweden as a "hero" per se - so I'm probably trending toward boomer.

Hey, Im new on here. Im buds with @Davefaster, he showed me this sight. Im not the best writer but I was wanting to do #13 on the contest, the one about the Dwarf taking a jackass and a honeycomb into a brothel..

Anyway, locked in.

Yeah, he is lmao. But yeah, im new here, so its gonna take me a second to get used to everything.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Maybe it's not the best idea to enter a contest as soon as you join the site?

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Too late.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Yeah I know. This'll probably be funny, what with all of the noobs joining this contest.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

He's got this. He will be guided and prompted by me. He will probably have, at least a 10k story written

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Alright sure. Whatever you say. I'll look forward to it.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Well Bucky's contest is off to a great start, already one banned contestant. So much for entry 14.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

STOP>_<! you deleted all of my story games. I'm just 10!:(

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

I'm sorry that happened to you, but try backing them up on your desk top. Just copy and paste in Word or something.

EDIT

Also, word of advice: since you're ten, you may not have experienced the gritty, awe inspiring, hilarious, troll festering toxicity that is the world of internet forums, despite your Gen Z pedigree. Especially forums like this one, which are kind of a throwback to the golden age of internet trolling (sometime around when you were born). As such, whatever you do, don't annoy people who have, for example, the power to delete your stuff. And definitely don't go telling people you're ten, because that already offends some people (not to mention, your age is probably a violation of the terms of service, since usually people have to be 13 to participate in internet forums).

Just be cool, go along with the flow, do not under any circumstances allow yourself to be sucked into the vortex of a flame war or argument. Just keep writing, and when you comment on the forums, don't stir any shit or allow anyone to bait you. Take criticism with a smile rather than offense, and stay low (and again, back your stuff up).

/free advice

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

He's already been banned at least three times, and hasn't shown himself capable of taking advice like 'just stop posting' so you're really wasting your breath here.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Ah. I don't envy you moderators. Hopefully the kid gets it this time.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

I'm always amused by pleas of "I'm just a kid or I'm only x age!" when I'm banning younger noob fucktards.

It's like they actually believe that's going to stop me.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Especially when 100% of the time that's the reason you're banning them in the first place.

The only ten year old that never caused any problems around here is @StoryTurtle, and that's because she barely ever posts. I mean, presumably because her parents are forcing her to do calculus and practice the violin during the eight hours a day she's not making jeans for Walmart, but still, I wish more of them would do this.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

@Mizal @Bucky

When I get my points back for entering my story I want to give 90 to @Ozoni.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

I have a question because I think that we don't recover the fee If we don't reach 4/8 as score.  I would love have my fee back just for present a game. Because I won't get a 4.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

You might not just lose your points; End might give you special tasks.

Old requirement was minimum site standards, which was just a 3.00/8. We have also established a 4.00/8 can be approached or surpassed in a matter of hours with the right scheme. So it’s time to start expecting better.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Well, I suppose is fair, for a native maybe is easy to have a  four. But well, I should have read the fact I would not recover my points just for presenting.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

This is very wholesome and normally I'd agree to this, BUT, you went into debt for the entry fee and taking 90 points would put you right back in the negatives. You can only take out loans for entering contests, any side agreements you have to have the points to pay for yourself. Best get to rating games.

e: Sometimes you are allowed to make bets with other contestants. I'm not sure if we're letting that happen here, but I suppose if End and Bucky are fine with it, those of you (and there are many) who went into the hole because of a lack of 100 measly points could be allowed to bet up to 25 against each other. You'll be getting a bonus of at least that much just for entering something eligible.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

I don't think its necessary here. It fit the theme of the Chaos Contest, but I think it's too much unnecessary work to keep track of the bets and figure out who loses and gets what.

But hey, you're doing the point stuff this time, so if you like self-inflicted torture ...

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

I can't believe no one likes Vikings.

@Pirate - Hey, you, get in here. Pirates are close enough to Vikings. Come write about them and earn your place in Folkvangr.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Wow, when you think about it, it's true. Anyway thanks but I'm currently working on my WIP and probably won't write another one in a such a short notice.

And what's Folkvangr? Is it a Viking thing?

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

It's one of the "good" Norse afterlives. The honored dead of Freya.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Oh okay, that's a cool fact. At least I've heard of Freja before. Thanks, Bucky.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Vikings are lame now. They're almost completely ruined by historians intent on making them woke, when they're not being co-opted by literal Nazis.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Vikings are never lame. They are an important fixture in every settlement of size in the upper Midwest.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

They helped move shipbuilding and navigating the sea further along. Also they were awesome warriors and their stories/myths are quite cool. They helped connect different cultures by trading too and I guess raiding.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

That's why you're doing the Viking prompt right?

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

I imagine these questions will come up at some point, so I'll head it off now.

Yes, you can have proofreaders and beta testers. They are encouraged.

No, you cannot co-author your proofreaders or beta testers.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

And no, there is actually no way for any non-admins to know whether you've co authored your proofreaders as long as the story isn't in sneak peek and they're removed before you actually publish the thing.

I RECOMMEND YOU READING THE INSTRUCTIONS AS IT IS ACTUALLY FORBIDDEN CONTINUE OLD STORIES. So you are disqualified before being accepted that is a new record

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

I read the rules. I was hoping that Bucky would be so desperate to get rid of the last few prompts that he would make an exception. Please don’t make assumptions.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

I mean... you could have made a new game and copied the 1,000 words over. It had to be, what, 3-4 pages max? Not that I condone breaking the rules, but seems like a silly thing to make a big deal about. If you are starting now, you are 12,000 words behind where my game is at even with those 1,000 words. Some people are procrastinating; however, you are in a similar position compared to proactive people. I know Camelon is at like 25,000+ words, for example.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

I didn’t want to circumvent the rules, and I didn’t plan on placing highly. I just wanted to motivate myself to finish a story.

32k so far, but I'm not where I want to be. Lost too much of my writing time over the last week. I'm hoping I have a couple endings done by mid-morning tomorrow, otherwise this could end up as just another embarassing fiasco.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

You are amazing, I am only at 20,000 because I am trying to write slowly but more grammatically correct so I am using twice the time in writing a page compared with other contests (basically I did the same word account now in 20 days that in the last in10) Hopefully, It will be far easier to read and enough to get a 4.

You're in the contest, it's too late to back out.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

I mean he can use the old story, but he'd be automatically DQed for it. He'd just be avoiding SHAME with it.

The intelligent thing for him to have done, would have been to not even mention the old story and joined the contest. Not like we would have known.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

I would think that the create date would give it away. Do I at least get the 25 points for submitting a story?

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

No, you have to reach a 4/8 score for that. You should have read the rules

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

I already knew that. End made it sound like I would only be avoiding SHAME if I submit a story since I’ve been disqualified. I want to clarify whether I would also receive the 25 points for submitting a qualifying story even if it’s disqualified from winning.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

Mizal's doing the points this year. That's up to her, I doubt it though.

Year's End Contest - Choose Your Own Prompt II

This is what I would have said, but End already ruthlessly tossed Bilbo into the pit. It’s getting full though, so maybe she can stack the bodies in a pile and climb out.

@Endmaster

If I add a branch in my no-longer-contest storygame that features the character climbing over bodies to get out of pit of shame while a dark  figure looks on in contempt  would  that be a sufficient offering for me to escape the shame?

Might as well give the game some purpose.

Just for the record, I am very disappointed in Dave. Even after being banned, he promised to finish his story. In all his glory, End even agreed that Dave could come back on a permanent basis (until he started being annoying again), provided that he come back with a very specific account name.

However, Dave has failed to uphold his end of the bargain, and he wasted a good prompt.

Also, since the @TheCanary has unpublished his story, he is ineligible to win.

Well, sad for him, but same result.

I actually never said that, I said Dave could come back, I didn't say for how long.

Honestly, I just wanted to see if he'd actually change his name to FistedDave so I could mock him for being so pathetic and then ban him again.

I didn't read the fine print clearly. But it's okay, I just wanted the story. Of course, Dave didn't even manage that in the end.

Three stories left, and I'll be done. For possibly the first time ever, I may be the first judge to finish, well, judging.

And I'll say, from what I've read so far, there have been two stories that have blown me away. One story that didn't quite reach that level, but was a far cry ahead of the rest of the pack. And a number of shorter stories that had flaws but were nevertheless generally entertaining and amusing. Then we have those who pooped on the keyboard to avoid SHAME.

I'm looking especially hard at you, Corgi. You should take some lessons from Mizal on how to be a bum but still come off as more than a breast obsessed mongrel. She truly is a master of the deadline dance. Oh, and I haven't forgotten about you either, Coins. Golf clap for Ford for surprising everyone with actual effort.

Five was close between Derp and Wildblue, as I had issues with both stories but still liked them better than the others. In the end, Derp won out because I was more interested in the world he had.
Cupcakitty's story had some issues with format, and Mara's story had some with grammar. Those made things hard enough to read that it prevented both of them from making top five.
The main character of Lopz's polar bear story got on my nerves too much, and there were some places where I think the author forgot that he was physically a bear.
Chef's story did not make me laugh, and the action didn't interest me. Sorry. Maybe you just caught me in a bad mood, but I was bored.
TheDeadKin...that was a fucking pain in the ass to read those text walls, and I got a lot of formulaic or repeated pages in exchange.
