A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

ayo!! ive arrived to this site to write my stories as the site i previously used has been shut down, so ive been trying to figure out how to work all of this stuff

and me being me, i always shoot for the stars so im starting right away into the advanced features, i think i mostly understand it all

but, ive made a test story to try out variables, items, restrictions and such, but im having some troubles with variables restriction, and with item restrictions but i need to experiment with that more before i try getting personal help

but, in my test story, i have advanced variables on, which of course also includes advanced variable restrictions, and to test this out i had one link that needs 10 var1 to pass on, and on the actual settings for it, im confused

im pretty sure its suppoed to be like; https://ibb.co/huUo0G

?though the problem being; even while having 0 var1 it still lets me pass by the link without restrictions

i have poor coordination with understanding most simple instructions most others can understand easily so i apologize for any slowness or confusion on my part

Try Equals instead of In List?

Future questions like this should probably go on the Advanced Editor board...and I may be staying the obvious here, but you're going to want anything you write to have better punctuation etc. than in your post here. (And it would actually help readability a great deal if you did the same when posting, too.)

What site did you come from, by the way?

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

True, but in all honesty I was kind of intimidated by it, and im conflicted because yes; I'm dealing with advanced settings, but I'm also a newbie.

And apologies for the writing, trust me, my actual writing isn't like this, I just have a habit of becoming a 'lazy typer' when writing non-story things. Old habits die hard, y'know?

And I came from Inklewriter, it's currently shutting down. Said site was very simple and easy for me to use, I never quite ventured into the more complicated features of it, but now that it's shutting down I've decided to move here, and also to try and give a shot to other features.

And! I realized my mistake with the In List and actually just changed it to equal, but it still didn't work.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

Huh, I thought Inklewriter was fairly popular, didn't realize they were on the way out.

Anyway, this is the equivalent of 'is it plugged in' I know, but are you sure you actually set that variable to ten before the player got to the page with that link?

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

Yeah, didn't know Inklewriter was shutting down either.

Proposal: Roll out the red carpet, but we're all standing on either side of it holding spiked clubs.

I for one welcome any Inklewriter refugees provided they can prove their worth.

It was! But basically the creators got tired of constantly fixing the bugs that came up when things were updated? I'm rather sad for it to be shut down though as I had used that site for years, it was quite literally a part of my childhood.

And don't worry, such questions are sometimes necessary. But yes, the first page the player starts at, VAR1 is set to 0(I made sure that in the variable options the starting number is 0) and then by time they get to the second page they're still at 0, the link to proceed has the non-working variable restriction.

If you wish I can share to you said test story so you can check it out yourself. (I'm not completely sure how I would go about that, so you'll need to help me with that too, sorry.)

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

The variable needs to be set to 10 for the link to show up, though. Or are you wanting it NOT to show up? (Check the box for 'NOT' to the right in that case.)

You can co author me to it if you want me to have a quick look, but I'm phone posting from a very spotty connection right now so it may be a minute.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

Well, the variable I think is set to 10, and I do want it to show up!

And I'll get right to that, and I don't mind, I can be patient.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

I think I added you as an co-author? Hopefully, at least.

And warning: this is just simply a test story, I really only planned for it to be seen by my eyes only so it's quite a mess and obviously not taken seriously at all, it's just a means for me to test stuff out.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

All right I think I see the issue. Give me a minute and I'll get you a working example. (You had everything set to Basic btw so I switched it to Advanced. Basic is crap don't ever use it.)

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

I thought I did switch it to advanced? Gosh I feel stupid.

 And alright!

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

To set it to Advanced you need to go to Story Properties, then down to Editor features, and make sure to save changes. Really, I don't know why they don't have it on by default.

Anyway...it's working now but to be honest I'm not actually sure what the problem was caused by. I didn't use the link to add 10 you had set up though and just threw down a link script in Next to increase the variable:
%VAR1 := %VAR1 + 10

Also unchecked 'OR' in the variable restrictions but I'm not actually sure if that mattered.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

I'm sorry and I'm going to sound even more stupid but I don't understand? And I don't understand nor know how to use scripting whatsoever.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

I think I see what you did? But the whole reason of having next and a seperate link to add 10 to var1 is so i can test out the feature of not being able to pass a link, and then having to go back to the previous page to pick the second link and gain 10 to var1 and then being able to pass.

I'm sorry if I'm just confusing things or such, I'm a bit of a mess.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

All right, then I've cleared the script out of that link and so now it's working like you wanted.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

The icon to put in the link script is right next to the link. What I told it to do was simply to add 10 to the variable called Var1 whenever the player clicked the link.

Under Help & Info there are a lot of articles, and a whole section on scripting. It's all very simple addition/subtraction and IF THEN stuff, and most things you'll want to do are easily possible once you get the hang of the syntax. I'd suggest at least reading over the beginner and intermediate articles, it explains things pretty well. (And you can always continue experimenting on your own once you've got the basics down.)

You'll need to get a handle on this stuff if you're going to be using variables and scripting in your game..and even if you don't intend to rely on them, there are circumstances where one line of script can save you a lot of headaches and tedium and help with organization immensely.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

I do plan on trying to get a handle on at the very least basic scripting! Though currently I'm just messing with advanced variables, items and restrictions and such. But I definitely will check out! But I'm happy to have this figured out! Even if it seemed that the problem was solved once 'OR' was ticked off? How anti-climatic.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

If that was the only condition, then it probably did. IIRC there need to be fewer restrictions with OR checked than there are restrictions total or the link is unrestricted.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

I think I understand now! (Hopefully, at least)

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

Did you come from Figment? Though I guess they haven't completely shut down yet.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

I came from Inklewriter, a very simple and easy-to-use writing site, so now that I'm here I'm a bit lost.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

We already have 'figgits' for Figment, but since it seems we might be getting a noob rush from Inkle we definitely need to come up with a slur for them, specifically.

Spazzler, do you have any recommendations?

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

'Inkies'?

"Oh no, the Inkies have arrived!" The Users screech out in terror as an onslaught of noob Inkies plague the site and forums, clogging the peaceful lives of CYS Users.

That's the best I can think of, to be honest.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

'Inkies' makes me think it's just as appropriate to call them Squid.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

Honestly, I like that one better. The Squids (AKA me) have arrived!

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

Welcome and good luck with your projects!

I like Inkies, cause it's cute. Squids is funnier though, just as long as they don't all start writing tentacle porn or something haha!

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

Thank you!

And I assure you I won't be doing that, and hopefully nobody else!

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

Well there, you're just asking for the nickname of Spaz. Not the best name choice. Anyhow, it seems Mizal's cleared up your stuff, but hey, I'm Steve, welcome aboard, Inky. Tell me when Clyde and the other two show up.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

Honestly I already go by the nickname spazz and I'm pretty chill with it, I don't mind.

But it's nice to be here! Even if the community is rather small, I'm sure I'll enjoy it here!

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

I'm guessing you're not British then, hm? :)

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

True, I'm not British but I know and have always known the actual meaning of it being an insult or rude term or ect. Which is kinda the point. An insult for a nickname.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

I've just heard that calling someone a spaz in England is much more serious than doing so in Canada or the USA.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

I'm not completely sure what it's considered in England, but here in Canada it's basically calling someone retarded, or on a lesser scale, very weird, commonly for people who physically act weird. An example for dialogue could be; "Look at that person totally spazzing out." Or y'know, like that. Though if it's a bit much I'm not against changing my name on here.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

I'm in Canada too.  But, I've realized that both Canada and the US are so big,  that sometimes you have to boil slang down to state/province.  Even though it means the same in Britian, apparently it's just consider that much more tacky to use it.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

Honestly just audible shrug. I rarely use 'Spazzler' much anyways and was already considering updating it.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

Oh, I'm not criticizing it.  I'm just one of those people who has a habit of contributing bits of trivia when I find a relevant opening.  Don't mind me.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

Naw, it's fine dear!

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

Spaz is a good name and here in AMERICA we fought a war to not care about what the British think dammit.

Also Spaz I'm so glad you turned out to be one of those rare good newbs, just had an experience with another who apparently can only stare cross-eyed at the screen and drool when faced with typed words arranged into sentences arriving in his inbox.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

That sounds rather unpleasant.  Though how you knew he was cross-eyed and drooling is a bit perplexing.  You must be clairvoyant.  Though, if you did have such a talent, I could think of better things to look at. ;)

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

True! (Also a quick check at the settings I'm 99.9% sure I can't change it so Spazzler's it is!)

And I'm happy I'm one of the 'good' ones!

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

Pretty sure you tried that again more recently, and got your capitol burned up for it and had to sue for peace so you could go back to butchering the British and have your slaves given back.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

Whilst I'm also not British, in the U.K. and Ireland, spastic is pretty bad. it's used commonly enough that it's best not to say it.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

I've only heard 'spaz' or 'spazzing out' in reference to awkward flailing behavior (or it might describe something like what my phone does when it gets a drop of water rolling around on the screen) and it's not much of an insult.

I have heard of the British usage, iirc when some space battle game literally called SPAZ came out and that was offensive or whatever. Here just plain 'retard' is a lot worse though.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

I'd hate any conflict over something as simple as a nickname, so anybody can call me whatever they want! They can stick with Spazzler, or spaz, or make up a name for me! Or you can always just stick with Dixon, which is my name.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

Lol its fine, people dont get offended about things here.

If you hang around long enough you will get called either a faggot or an asshole at some point so brace yourself now.

(Those are our two unofficial Orders and everyone is eventually placed in one or the other....I recommend joining Team Asshole really because that's the one our admins are in.)

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

Can you just call me an asshole right now? Cause I'd like to just preemptively go into that one.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

No no no it doesn't work that way. A faggot has to cry about you being an asshole, or an asshole has to get fed up and call you a faggot. (See, I am only empowered to do the latter.)

It's a good system, keeps things nice and balanced.

A few very skilled members such as @Malkalack manage to be both, but that's not something I recommend for beginners.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

What the fuck are you talking about? You're most definitely a faggot. You get weird and super offended at liberal things at really awkward times, like when you made a whole thread to pretend to be liberals and mock their stereotypes, in something that not only was weird, but didn't even manage to be funny or offensive.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

And this whiny upset post you're making now isn't weird at all.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

Is that an attempt at making an "I know you are, but what am I?" response but not like a faggot? Didn't go well.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

Hmmm.  I wonder where I am more likely to fall...I don't think either applies really.  My short comings tend to lie elsewhere.

A Very Stubborn Newb Looking For Help

Will do retard, pleasure to have you aboard.
