If you are going to take the time to actually write something in the comments section, write something useful. Writing "!!!!!!!" or "?????" or "......" does the writer no good. If you dont have anything to say, DONT comment. If you have a critcism, feel free to write it, but random punctuation marks does the author no good.
If the people writing these comments are non-members then all you can do is delete their messages from your story-page.
JJJ brought up the issue of deleting non-constructive comments a while ago and I initially disagreed with him on it (as did most of the community) but I've since changed my mind.
Some members enjoy/don't mind non-constructive comments and so we figured if an author wants comments deleted from their storygame they could come to a moderator. Now I'm for an opt-out system where moderators delete non-constructive comments unless the author contacts them requesting they be left alone, as some members (particularly the ones who don't visit the forums) may not be aware of who the moderators are and consequently see these comments like "!!!" and "bad. 1/8" and leave the site. Members (like End for example) who enjoy the bad comments can request that the comments don't get deleted.
The alternative to this is placing a "report" button next to bad comments, or allowing authors to delete comments from their own storygames.
tl;dr I'm in favour of deleting negative comments that offer no constructive criticism and comments like "?" and "!!!".
Two thoughts: the types of members who would leave such comments probably don't read the forum. Second, good stories get good comments, and bad stories get bad comments. A lot of times, when readers give unhelpful comments, it's just because they want to provide the writer with what they believe to be equal effort as what they believed the writer put into the story.
I dont really agree here urnam. Several comments ive seen were from active members of the forums. also, Good story games have also gotten pointless comments.
So the question remains, why comment with nothing helpful at all?
I couldn't answer that since I don't ever really comment. Critique isn't my strong suit so I often don't have anything to say so I just skip it completely.
that is perfectly acceptable playa. I dont always feel compelled to comment either. Especially when i see someone else has already summed up my opinions.
Because some people just want to be a jerk and insult the author for no reason.(Even if the game was good.) I think that a report button next to comments would be a good idea so that the moderators could have a look. I know there are some pretty lame comments on my games but it would be quite taxing to JJJ or October to hunt through my games and find them(Possibly, I'm not sure how they delete comments.)
Also, so that the report button is not abused, if the moderators feel that the button is being used to much by certain members for no reason they can fine them with points or something.
Just a thought.
you can let me know of any games of yours that have questionable comments and ill be more than happy to delete them. its not too hard.
I agree with Nate. Your report button is a quick, message to October, Nate or myself.
@1st thought: Not true, people like EricDrewCents post useless comments on stories pretty often.
@2nd thought: Look at Mommy and any story by Endmaster. They get stupid comments all the time.
On a couple of storygames, you can see I pretty much spammed it with a mean phrase, not like the author cared. :D
I disagree that the comment section needs to be for something useful. A comment is just that - a comment. So posting something like "I liked it!" by definition is not very useful, but it does allow the reader to give the writer a sense of what they though of the story in general. "..." & "O_o" are also valid comments in my opinion, because they still relay a sense of what the reader thought overall (ie. there are no words to describe how this story makes me feel (or) this is really weird).
I agree that blatantly stupid or offensive posts should be deleted, like "Your story sucks clown ass and you should die" or "SPOOOOOOOOON!!!!!!!" The first goes too far, and the later has nothing to do with the story (unless it is about cutlery or something).
A Post like "I hate it, it really sucks" is a still valid comment (if a bit harsh), but if the reader really feels that way they can post it. If the writer gets all hurt feelings over it, then they can request a delete.
And berk gets it right once again.
i agree that "i liked it!" is a valid and useful comment. as is, "I hate it". but with the latter, if you feel that passionate about hating it, explain why. however, that alone isnt even my issue. its the 'non' comment comments.
"..." is pointless, if you are speechless, dont comment at all lol and what does "0_o" even mean? lol but again, it was just a thought.
I agree, and moreover, it doesn't help the reader determine if he should invest the next 30-60 minutes playing the storygame. We should strive for Amazon-quality comments instead of YouTube-quality comments.
"We should strive for Amazon-quality comments instead of YouTube-quality comments." alex said it perfectly. If we want great reads, we need better comments on how to get there.
regardless of people's opinions on 'helpful' comments, totally stupid comments (ie 'i like pancakes', 'hello, goodbye') will be deleted. if you feel you have found a comment that fits that description, feel free to let me know and i will check it out. thanks,
I can stand by that.
And if you guys really feel like we're missing something, then I can always add a "bury" option. It'd be like, "8 comments are hidden, click here to show all". Kinda like how we bury the low-rated storygames by default.
The only ratings I think I'd ever want deleted are the ones when some idiot puts three million exclamation marks (or letters) and it stretches out the comments section ruining the front page of it.
Fortunately that hasn't happened to any of my stories (yet) but I have seen it on the stories of others.
*Cough* Swiftstryker *Cough*
those are annoying arent they End? lol if you notice any from now on and the comment doesnt warrant staying, i will delete them.
Alex and Nate, I think you should read this thread: http://chooseyourstory.com/forums/the-lounge/message/6835 (Note: Cool's two crazy flame rants have since been deleted)
I started the thread saying something along the lines of: Negative comments without constructive criticism should be deleted because they provide no service to the author, whatsoever. I said that positive comments without reasoning do provide service (show that work is appreciated) so they should be left. I stand by this notion.
However, all of the community basically said that they wanted "Bo disapproves", "Bad 3/8" and other comments of the like to be left there. I'm still perplexed by this but I went with the popular opinion. I'd be extremely down to start deleting the "Bad 3/8" comments as of now. I already delete things like "..." and "lol" and "asihdaiushdauishd". And the like.
That is strange. However, many of the current users are the people who leave comments like "awesome approves". they make up a large majority right now. Therefore, I have to side with Alex on this one. He, and myself as well, would like to see more quality comments/constructive comments. 'Youtube' comments are useless, and should be deleted. my final argument would be "Bo approves 4/8" means nothing. If he rated it a 4, good for him. Restating that he rated it so means nothing to the author.
I'd still prefer to see the comments, even if it only shows what they rated the game. An alternative would be that we can see what each individual member rates our story, which leaves comments solely for constructive criticism or praise.
[That is strange. However, many of the current users are the people who leave comments like "awesome approves". they make up a large majority right now]
While, that is true, that shouldn't discount their opinion. For instance, if we're asking a population whether or not they think gay-marriage should be legal, you can't discount all of the people who are currently married in a same-sex union because they're the majority (if they were the majority).
Don't forget, I'm on your side. I want those comments deleted (as I stated above), I just want to make sure the process is right. We can lay the law down, but lets just do it, rather than making justifications, or lets listen to popular opinion. One or the other.
Important to note that loudest opinion != popular opinion, esp on teh interwebs. I learned this early on over at TDWTF when listening to the opinions of the 1% (comments vs. readers) of the 1% (really loud commenters). Different community and all, but similar rules apply I think.
But regardless... let's do this.
Comments from here on forward will be "soft deleted" (i.e. marked as visible), and when i get around to re-doing the story page (it's high on the list, esp w/ the redesign), there will be a button to unhide them. I think authors should get an email about all comments too (if they subscribe of course), but you know, one thing at at time :-)
So go ahead and delete now if you want, and behind the scenes it will just mark them as invisible. And if you don't like it... don't worry, they'll be back soon.
I think now that we have at least one creator wandering around, the hiding option is awesome.
