he had a 1000 word minimum on a debate as trivial as "Do Aliens Exist", it wouldn't have ended up well.

If anyone else wants to do one of these (My computer is too screwed up), here are the upcoming topics for LD debate for inspiration.

  • Resolved: The constitutions of democratic governments ought to include procedures for secession.

  • Resolved: When making admissions decisions, public colleges and universities in the United States ought to favor members of historically disadvantaged groups.

  • Resolved: United States Supreme Court justices should be subject to term limits.

  • Resolved: The United States is justified in intervening in the internal political processes of other countries to attempt to stop human rights abuses.

  • Resolved: In a democracy, voting ought to be compulsory.

  • Resolved: On balance, the privatization of civil services serves the public interest.

  • Resolved: On balance, labor unions in the United States are beneficial.

  • Resolved: The United States ought to guarantee universal health care for its citizens.

  • Resolved: Oppressive government is more desirable than no government.

  • Resolved: Rehabilitation ought to be valued above retribution in the United States criminal justice system.

Resolved: Oppressive government is more desirable than no government

These both sound intresting. It would be hard to argue for both sides.

yeah, I'm pretty thankful for that, unfortunately a lot of topics are unfortunately one-sided. I've debated the second one as a practice round at a meeting in the form of "Anarchy is a preferable alternative to an oppressive government", and it was pretty interesting. It turned out to be Security verses Security :P

Kinda like "It turned out to be Personal Security verses National/Goverment Security"?

No, Personal Security verses Personal Security. He was arguing from the point that higher military activity and stronger presence means less crimes, and I was arguing from the point that an oppressive government harms the people and incites riots and other chaotic events that lead to innocents being harmed. We had four people voting that day (no idea why, we normaly either go with 1 or 3) so it came out to a tie.

Okay that makes more sense.

If you're a valued employee of said oppressive government, then its probably preferable to none.

I dunno, I grew up in Detroit, so I'd probably lean towards anarchy since I'm at least somewhat more familiar with it.
