A place to sit back, hang out, and make monkey noises about anything you'd like.

I have decided to enlist in the US army. I have not been assigned a date to ship out to basic combat training yet(it could be weeks or months). Until then I will still be active but not daily while I attend a few courses for new recruits and go through physical training to prepare for BCT. When I do go to BCT I will be gone for 10 weeks, then I will be shipped out to the Defensive Language Institute for 6-18 months for advanced training in my field.

Since Linguists are a little less common in the Army it could be a few months before I go to BCT, since they will schedule me around when I will be sent to DLI.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you guys know why I've been a little less active lately and if I suddenly drop off the face of the planet it may be because I didn't get to say goodbye before I ship out to BCT. If that happens, then don't worry I will be back. :D

Wow, that's a big commitment. I hope you feel rewarded with this choice. You'll be missed, (I wont have a drinking partner) but you'll do well with your magic. Impressive decision. I wish I could have courage to do that stuff.

Well considering that it's probably my best chance at a stable career which I would actually enjoy, I feel pretty good about it. Plus I get all the benefits of it. Not to mention I love learning languages and about other cultures, so I'll be paid to do so. I could be anything from an interpreter to interrogating foreign POWs in their own language. Plus after I get through DLI I'll have a high security clearance so if I don't reenlist I could work in other Government programs which require that clearance level. :)

You should aim for interrogator. Just threaten them with curses and you'll be done.

But seriously, it's a good decision since it gives you a education that can allow you to progress into other jobs.

I actually would love to be an interrogator, but I would probably only be able to do so if male linguists were unavailable. Although I do have a morbid love for tripping people up in conversation XD.

After visiting this site so soon?  Like aman said, it's a big commitment.  I wish you luck on that!

Thanks, it's something I've been looking into for the past year or so. I'm actually looking forward to it, although I'm nervous about BCT XD.

Wow, good luck, I hope you do well and get home safely or Amans is going to burst into tears over his beloved drinking buddy.  Maybe ill see you in a few years if your still there and my funds dont work out.

Well I enlisted for the next 8 years so I probably will be. Although it is possible I could be stationed as far away as Germany. :)

The Military is a fine choice for the right people and I have the feeling it will be a good opportunity for you! I wish you the best and know you'll be back sooner or later. (After a year or so in the Military, it becomes more or less a regular job, so you'll have time for hobbies). Until then though - Good Luck!   =)

If you end up in Israel for some odd reason, in two years, I'll be there studying. Though I'd feel bad that you got sent there, Israelis are scary people to live with.

Enlisting

Probably not. I speak German and am studying Russian so I would probably go to Europe if I anywhere. :)

Enlisting

Too bad, I could introduce you to Arack. But, we Israelis don't take kindly to witch craft.

Enlisting

Don't worry. I'll ship you some good German beer or Russian Vodka instead :D

Enlisting

I haven't had German Beer, yet. I tend to drink American whenever I'm drinking beer.

Good luck simple, I hope you make it though the training and get into the military.

Thank you!

Good luck.

As a forewarning, I know several people in the military, and while they all like their position, they dislike the job/people. Then again, they're all infantry and whatnaught, so maybe linguistics will be nicer.

I wish you the best of luck.  You are doing a great service, and even if I have only known you for just about a minute or so, none of us will forget you.  We will be eagerly waiting for you return.

So yoiu're going in as a linguist or as somewthing else?

Enlisting

Yes, a skilled linguist. Which means I will have to earn a Top Secret clearance within the military and will be doing anything from translating intercepted documents/transmissions to interrogating foreign POWs, informants, or deserters. I already speak German and am learning Russian. I will polish it off at DLI, then receive my station. I'll be trilingual by the time I am finished with all of my training, but I may consider taking on an Afghan language since that is an in demand language within the military at the moment.

http://www.goarmy.com/linguist/about/linguist.html <- that has the basic info on it. But, most of what I know about the job came from my recruiter. The website info only applies to the general job and I am aiming for a more specialized position.

I got my BCT date. I'll be leaving in two weeks, so I'll be gone for 10 weeks starting then. After that I'll have access to internet and cellphone at night while I'm in advanced training and DLI. So I'll be here for a bit longer then I'll dissappear, then come back :)

No, you have to go to sleep, otherwise our threats and cheers will be for nothing.

lol XD. Well, I have friend in the National Guard and he says advanced training usually ends around 5PM then you get free time. But, I also have a friend in the Air Force who is doing schooling for a specialist career similar to what I'll have to go to DLI for and she has very small and unusual amounts of free time XD. But, I got two weeks to lurk around before I leave for Fort Jackson. ;)

So basically, I only have a week or so left to finish my zombie story so you can playtest it ;)

Enlisting

Yes! That or it will have to wait until after I get home for a couple of days after BCT :D

Enlisting

playa988 will be very disappointed to see you gone, as well as some others...

Enlisting

I promise I'll be back! It's only 10 weeks. After that I should be able to get on at least every other day for an hour or two when I have free time after 5pm :D I'll be ya'lls Christmas present! :P

Enlisting

And Sabley came back from the army to receive a CYS hero's welcome!

Aww, this is heartwarming. The community has changed so much but she was able to come back years later and snuggle back in like she never left.
