Questions about a storygame? Thoughts on Eternal? Any other IF you're playing out there?

Warrior Cats Games

9 years ago

Alright guys, so in advance, before I get into this topic, I think it's very important that all of you take this very seriously.

I'm wondering what the community's opinion is on our Warrior Cats epidemic?

I am under the impression that there's not a single good Warrior Cats game (correct me if I'm wrong) and they're clogging up a good deal of the site. If you go hit 'random storygame' 10 times, you'll probably get a warrior cats game. So, we could enact a rule that Warrior Cats games aren't welcome here, in an attempt to excise that segment of website visitors.

If the people publishing these storygames aren't adding anything to the community besides these stories, and they're just using the site as a launching pad for their (nearly) fetishized stories and then going off site and talking about them, then I think this isn't a bad idea.

However, we have to be comfortable with the following:

1. First and foremost, we have to understand that if it were us coming to a website and writing those stories, we would feel that we had not broken any rules and we would be upset when the site suddenly unpublished all of our storygames. We have to be comfortable with making others feel that way.

2. We have to admit that this sort of decree is a slippery slope. Once people are comfortable with unpublishing a series of storygames that don't break site rules, we have to worry that this will be brought up for all sorts of storygames. We have to make sure that this is a dire enough situation to warrant a decree like this.

3. We have to be confident that unpublishing these storygames will cause the strange Warrior Cats community to go elsewhere.

Now, maybe I'm wrong and you guys like those storygames, and if that's the case then let me know in this thread. Please discuss here.

Note: If you're not willing to defend your stance, don't bother posting here because I'm not looking for votes, I'm looking for rationales.

There are a few "okay" WarriorCats games (in the 4-5 rating range) but yeah, the vast majority are 1-2.  From what I've seen, the WC fandom isn't receptive to constructive criticism about their stories, either.

They haven't exactly "broken the rules," but they don't interact with the rest of the community, and they're utterly contemptous towards anyone who offers suggestions on improvement.  We either get "it's my story and I can write whatever I want" or "well, the author is only six, so you can't expect her to do any better."

I don't think the site is required to cater to people who have zero interest in participating in the community.  We're under no obligation to provide WC fans with a place to post their stuff.

Side note: We've always said that we had the right to unpublish stories that didn't meet site standards (troll games, unfinished games, etc.) And a number of people have mentioned in FWW that they wish we did have a rule about removing stories that are consistently rated 1s and 2s.  (Which most WC stuff is.)  Perhaps we don't need to say "no warrior cats stuff ever," perhaps it would be enough to simply remove anything that is overwhelmingly 1s and 2s.

Not interacting with the community is fine, it's not breaking the rules as far as I know. If we kick people off or delete their stories for just making storygames and not visiting the forums then I would call that an overreaction.

@SindriV

~~~
In a similar vein to Sethaniel's rationale, I'd have to agree with removing most of these stories (at least the 1's,2's, and 3's), simply for the reason that they do not meet site standards.  It wastes the guests' time if one were to end up scrolling through a massive clot of WC fanficts, and though we DO accept fanficts at this site, we also have the goal here to make GOOD, tasteful CYS games (or at least make them enjoyable, right?).  I've seen only maybe two or three storygames concerning WC that would fit site standards (and have received appropriate results of 4's, 5's, [and I'm not sure entirely, but perhaps a 6?] for this).  The rest, like Sethaniel says. don't seem inclined to improve their story to site standards simply because they are not willing to become better writers.
So really, if the site doesn't need this, feel free to remove all the 1's and 2's WC storygames from this site.  Now, you might see some have higher scores, and perhaps at least one or two can be allowed to be kept, but the rest will have to go.
I enjoy a few stories with ratings of 3 (For humor, if nothing else) so i'd just be in support of limiting that to 1s and 2s
Warrior Cats Games
9 years ago
But does that go for every 1 and 2 ranked story or just the warrior cats ones? Like 3J said, this is a slippery slope. If the story shouldn't exist because it has been deemed "bad", then surely the same goes for everything else equally bad, right?
Warrior Cats Games
Oh no, all of them.
Warrior Cats Games
A lot of us seem to agree on that, on banning the bad games regardless of their connection to cats.
Warrior Cats Games
I agree. There isn't a single good WC game, and they are definitely clogging up a good deal of this site. Let's enact the rule, that they're not welcome here. They will definitely go somewhere else if we do so.
Well, I don't think it's fair to outlaw fan-fics about a certain work, but we should probably make it clearly known that fanfics should be written with the goal of entertaining other fans, not showing off how in love with a certain character you are or how much you just absolutely love the work. Personally, I would make a PSA regarding the place of fanfics in the community and the fact that there are already an absurd number of warrior cats fan-games on the site. If that didn't work, I would then outlaw Warrior Cats games or restrict them greatly, knowing that I had given the WC fandom a warning.
Warrior Cats Games
I've seen so many warrior cats stuff in here that I actually googled it. The original idea is from a series of novels and books called "Warriors" which gained popularity recently. The Wikipedia page on it is very comprehensive about the lame-ish plot , as the novels are actually intended for children under 13 or so. Of course, if a good storygame writer goes on and does something based on it,  it would be one of the best RPG adventure games on CYS, but seeing as only few unreliable newbie users post them, do not expect quality, and expect the stories to have similar plots and formulas, as only the children those stories are made for will ever want to make something based of Warrior Cats, and children are not too imaginative ( or imaginative but in a bad and lame and childish  way) .
Overall, I cannot see a good ending if you ban their existence outright, but it will draw more Warrior Cats fans here, and as we all know, strength in number and stuff, they'll probably want a category for those. (which I wouldn't actually mind, especially if you hide them from the new games list.) I seriously do not have any idea. I myself am planning to write 20-ish inter-related stories ( two already published ), would that make me a spammer and a childish otaku (fanboy)? No, because it's all from my own strange mind, not based on fiction that's been written and published already . Good storygames CAN be made of almost any book/novel,  but  only by those who actually know what they're doing, and considering that i'm here since 2012 and still don't know how to use variables,while shameful for me, shows that you can't be an expert on writing storygames only because you like some series, and definitely not an expert when you joined yesterday and go full " WARRIORCATZ LOL" on us . Also, i'm not sure on the copyrights for those Warrior Cats.
My only idea is for a system implemented that would not allow storygames to be published right away;, but rather approved by moderators before they pop up in the new stories list. This way, no troll stories will pass anymore, less Warrior Cats epidemic and higher quality storygames, as I guess the mods can also proofread the stories too and give out suggestions to the writer before publishing it.
Warrior Cats Games
9 years ago
The idea isn't bad at its core, but this would make the moderators very busy and would probably mean the site needed more of them.
Warrior Cats Games
9 years ago
so? They can always get more mods, and stories by trusted authors ( people with over 500 points ) could get published automatically without further checking.
Warrior Cats Games
9 years ago
Warrior Cat games have been a plague to this site for far too long. The stories are almost always published with in a couple days of the author joining this site, that should say something about their community. The authors of these stories are always the ones to say, "Hy gais tis my frist storie so pls be eaasiy wen u coment". Their grammar is usually on a second grade level and as stated above, everytime we try to give constructive criticism they respond by saying we are mean people and nothing is wrong with their story. I used to love seeing what new storygames would be published on this site, and now everytime I look there, it;s just more Warrior Crap Cats. Or should I say Warior Katz!11!!!? It does make me appreciate the good stories much more though.
These are the Warrior Cat games:
  1. You wake up in a forest of some sort.
  2. You choose a gender that does not add to the story at all.
  3. You  go hunting with one of the poorly named and possibly misspelled clans.
  4. You meet another Cat of the opposite gender.
  5. Freaky furry kitty sex with someone you JUST MET!
  6. A couple of weeks later you have a house full of kittens.
  7. The End
The Warrior Cat games have over stayed their welcome on this site and need to go. They take up space, and worst make this site look bad as a whole.  Now, as to what you listed:
  1. I have no problem making them feel bad. There needs to be an exception to that rule, and these Warrior Cats met that exception.
  2. I don't think it will be a problem for other stories. It's clear that the Warrior Cat community has been a problem. If you wanted to make this seem more unbiased, just make a rule stating any stories rated as 1 or 2 will be unpublished. However, this could cause some false ratings which in turn give us more a reason to delete them.
  3. That's the tricky part, I see three possible scenarios.
  • The Warrior Cat community will just leave and take their crap with them. Solving all the problems.
  • The Warrior Cat community will keep publishing stories either to prove their worth, defiance, or because they just don't care.
  • The Warrior Cat community will become and/or invite trolls to this site who in turn will publish a series of shitty stories that may increase the problem.
I support getting rid of all if not just the 1 and 2 rated Warrior Cat stories.
Warrior Cats is a great idea of a book, it's weird and different and it can be entertaining. But....the only people who write them seem to be people who can not comprehend what makes a good story. Some are okay whilst others are just downright terrible. Some of the authors will hate your for criticizing them whilst others won't. But I don't think we should ban them outright. People choose it to be there first work and will eventually get better in time. I think we should all treat them equally and if it is terrible....we can say so.
Warrior Cats Games
9 years ago
Well as a general rule I'm not big into fanfic anyway and the fact that all the warrior cats stories seem to focus on cat sex reminds me of furrydom which means I'm really not into the stuff.
But all of them are written badly at best or are outright troll stories at worst. Most of the time they contain one sentence pages filled with spelling errors. Even the titles of the stories are sometimes misspelled. This is sometimes followed by a bunch of positive comments and 8 ratings by the author and their friends. (Or more likely the author's multiple accounts)
I think there is exactly one Warrior Cats story that was well written and it's an older story that was written long before this epidemic. (Cant remember what the exact title is right now)
I'd be fine with deleting all of them or at least any of those stories in the 1-2 range if you don't want to go the full ban route.
Warrior Cats Games
9 years ago
@Reverencia
Danaos said it best, I think; the majority (if not all) of these stories are not worth keeping and usually involve at least one scene in which two kittens end up having sex. The only games of these kinds with high ratings are, I believe, troll games specifically made to screw with the warrior cat author (I refuse to believe that there is more than one person making all these stories) by satirically mocking his work, or games that have been upvoted hundreds of times by mysterious guests.
Now, this is not to say that a good Warrior Cat game cannot be made, it is simply not being done as of yet.
Anyway, here's my (Personal, and then objective) rationale:
Personally? I do not like fanfiction stories and the fanfiction genre in general, if you are too un-creative to make your own story and have to borrow the majority of it from something someone else has already written then I find you to be an unimaginative author; therefore I do not care for the blow that this would deal the any future Warrior Cats authors who want to write fanfiction about the show.
Additionally, I do not care for the show itself (it is a ridiculous concept that i'm fairly sure was just used to sell plushies) and so I do not care if these fans have their stories deleted, regardless of its "quality".
This author has been plaguing the site for too long and his work should be deleted, as should all work of his kind.
Also, frankly, I don't care about the feelings of some Warrior Cat fan who wants to make a storygame about it.
Now, objectively?
Well, objectively, the issue is not the Warrior Cats stories at all, they're just another small group of troll stories among the massive wave of troll stories that we receive every single day, they only receive our community's specific hatred because while the other mass of stories are an incohesive, unrelated mess, the Warrior Cats stories are prolific enough and have the same general theme (Warrior Cats, enthusiastic kitty porn), giving us something to latch onto.
The issue here is that the standards for what makes a certifiably unpublishable storygame here are far, far too low. Any story (regardless of whether or not it meets the standards set here) that has been published for at least a week (plenty of time for members to rate it) and has consistently kept a score of 1 should be automatically unpublished or deleted from the site (I specifically requested this feature in the wishing well before but it was refused, I don't think it will change now but it is the truth, the lowest possible rating being consistently kept is reserved for the very worst story games and this should be the biggest factor taken into account when deciding whether or not to delete it). Bad stories in general, not just Warrior Cats, need to be removed.
In addition, banning that specific type of story will not be a good idea, as there is a chance (however small) that one day, an author who genuinely cares about what he's going to write shows up on the site and tries to write a Warrior Cats story that will be a story dedicated to the series that he loved as a child, and that this story will be both enjoyable and well-written. To eliminate the chance that we might one day have that story is not a good idea, and should not be done.
---
Now, I addressed the first two points you said we would need to be comfortable with - but not the third.
Doing this will stop the Warrior Cat stories we already have, what it will not do however is stop the author making the troll stories from making more troll stories (just, you know, not abut Warrior Cats). The trolling will continue, just in a different form.
That is my rationale, take it as you will.
Warrior Cats Games
9 years ago
Agreed with the third point , you will not stop people who enjoy Warrior Cats from coming here. The new authors (I don't care if it's one or multiple, honestly, it's the same problem regardless) will keep coming, and will probably not know about the rule prior to writing their stories. They'll keep being made as long as the series is popular.
Warrior Cats Games
9 years ago
If I remember correctly, there is a single warrior cats game that is good (rated 5 or 6, without troll votes).
Anyways, no, we don't need to make a decree to delete all warrior cats games. We need to make a decree to higher the standards of the site, and basically have a mass purge of all 1+2 Storygames. With a higher standard of Storygames, we avoid the problems listed above, and protect our site from ALL bad games.
Mind you, I think there should be some sort of 'judgement' for all attempts to publish a story, with X amount of people reading it and deciding if it's a good story. Doesn't have to be mods, just trusted members of the site who volonteer.
Warrior Cats Games
9 years ago
This I agree with. The question shouldn't be "do we remove Warrior Cats stories?", the question should be "do we remove the extremely bad stories, including a majority of the Warrior Cats ones?".
Although, how this is implemented is important. You mentioned that there should be some sort of "judgement" for all attempts to publish a story. I would prefer if it was more "everyone" who did the judging. Basically, after getting a certain amount of ratings (good or bad) or after a certain period of time after being published, the story would get automatically unpublished/deleted if the ratings are horrendous. Thanks to the advanced rating mechanic this site has (taking into account the number of points each rater has), it would be next to impossible to abuse this system by creating multiple accounts to upvote your own bad story.
Warrior Cats Games
9 years ago
@SindriV We may be able to convince the mod to make a flagging system to delete stories... Though, there would have to be a very good and very specific system for this to work on this site.
Let's say that if the story is flagged 1 time for every 3-5 views, a moderator is alerted and they can decide whether or not the story needs to be deleted. Possibly by starting a vote for deletionΦ. Also, to solve the terribly rated stories, if a story has a rating of 3 or below for a month, the moderator is alerted and then the process continues.
Φ By vote, I mean a little counter appears above the description and you can vote yes or no for deletion. If more than 50% of people vote yes, it's deleted.
Warrior Cats Games
Well, I did some research. There's no sense in me attempting a rational without knowing how a warrior cat fan feels. I feel that proper research must be done and I have to get the facts if I'm going to be serious about a topic - which in this case I will be.
So, let me begin explaining. Warrior Cats is a book series by Erin Hunter(pseudonym) who has also written many other animal-based fiction novels. The demographic for Erin's Warrior Cat books is ages 10 - 13, which is not the general demographic of the website. There are an original total of five novels. The books and author have won minor awards, and no first-place awards in anything.
"It's basically about cats who live in the forest and there are 4 Clans and Star Clan, where dead cats go. There is: a leader, a deputy, warriors, apprentices, kits (baby cats) and elders (retired/old cats) in each Clan. Each book has some sort of crisis which the warrior cats must band together to prevent. They also have a warrior code which they must try to follow."
Are there any good Warrior Cat games on this fair website? Absolutely not. They were all written by 10 - 13 year olds and most of them are simply to troll. At the age of 10, these kid's computer capabilities are around "Kidz Pix" level. Using simple programs to draw and color during recess. On the internet they probably watch funny videos of people getting hurt or animals that talk. They probably don't realize what internet trolling is, so they ignore whatever people say about it. Ten years old and they can already type worse than they spoke when they were six years old. Ten to thirteen years old + book they probably have to read for school + the book appeals to them = bad stories; everywhere.
Knowing this, we can conclude on the three points given:
1. Yes, I am completely comfortable doing that, here. 10 - 13 year olds are honestly not going to care in a few weeks that their stories are gone. They know the stories are bad, and some of them were written by actual trolls. Any Warrior Cat game below the rating of 4 - 5 should get the boot. I don't mind the fandom, it's the fans themselves which are infected with 10 - 13 year old disease.
2. They do not break the website rules. However these story-games do break the unwritten rules made by the general morals of the website. This includes "No troll games" - and 95% of all Warrior Cat games are troll games that contribute nothing to the site, and if anything - degrade the website for newer members.
3. Will it? I doubt it. 10 - 13 year olds are a disease hard to get rid of. It will take time, and they won't listen until the very end. It will slow the progressively worsening games, and it will clean up the site a bit - but I doubt it will get rid of all the Warrior Cat fans.
Hordes of bad games with the same theme isn't uncommon. We may have some decent zombie games now, but a quick look into horror will reveal we have tons that are just as bad as any of the warrior cats games.
I think a key difference though is that zombies are more or less universally liked, while these warrior cats are only liked by young children who don't really have the capacity to write.
Looking at some of the games, it's clear they have no idea what they're doing. I mean, I see some of these in Edutainment, and Fantasy Adventure. While you could make an argument for Fantasy Adventure, Edutainment makes no sense, and we have a very obvious Fan Fiction section. I think all the stories that are in the wrong category should be moved/removed.
Honestly, I'd prefer to leave them. I really don't like them, but we're all free to ignore them. Though I'd like to add a category called "The Hall of Shame", or something like that, where we move all of the stories that are rated 1 or 2. That way they can still read their terrible game, but we don't have to.
Warrior Cats Games
I believe that it should be quality that is the defining factor in a story, not the setting. If someone makes a decent warrior cats game let him be but the mousepaw style ones.... aaaah
So yeah, delete most low quality stories
Warrior Cats Games
http://chooseyourstory.com/story/warrior-cats-adventure
The above is an actual, decent Warrior Cat game. Overrated, yes, but really proves that some deserve not to be deleted. It is for this reason that I agree that only the Warrior Cats games that are rated 1-2 should be unpublished, if the rating is any higher then they deserve to be kept up,
The way I see it, this is a public site, if you are actually 10 years old and want to write a game about your favorite series then go for it. It may not be very good, but if you tried then it would probably get a 3 at least, and not be deleted. If you don't try and get a 1-2 then it should be deleted.
And as with almost all fandoms, this will probably pass in a couple months from now anyhow (I hope).
The Warrior Cats fanfictions on this site have just melded into this one annoying copy-and-paste storygame that I'm apprehensive to skim read through whenever it shows up on the New Storygames section. I've also just been assuming that there's one or two guys writing most of them for reasons I honestly don't know and can't bring myself to care about, no matter how many times these things are published.
I know that there are plenty of exceptional fanfictions out there that compliment their source materials, but I can't say that I've taken the Warrior Cats fanfictions on the site seriously for a long while now. I really doubt that banning some of them will be a huge blow for the site, with most of them having been made with very little effort put into them as it is. Keeping the ones that are rated 3 or more is fine, as some of you guys have already said, and I support banning the ones that are rated as 1's and 2's.
I suggest continuing to allow (non rule breaking) crap stories of all kinds, but having the Random Story Game automatically filter out 1 & 2 Rated Stories from the results.
Warrior Cats Games
9 years ago
I like this idea, it's a way for people just finding the site and using the random button to find a good story to read.
Warrior Cats Games
9 years ago
To be honest, I haven't read any of the WC stories after the first one to pop-up on this site, but I do not think we should ban games based solely on their theme. Don't get me wrong, I believe unpublishing a ton of them wouldn't be a bad idea, but that is because of their low, low ratings (and the possibility of intimate cat-related scenes). If a warrior cat story is published that is decently written, it can stay in my opinion.
Warrior Cats Games
9 years ago
Like some of the others pointed out, Warrior Cats Adventure was written several years before the epidemic. It's not the greatest game the site has to offer but it is a decent attempt from a decent writer who genuinely put effort into making a decent story game. For that one game alone, I'd say that banning all Warrior Cats games would be unfair. (Also there are a few joke Warrior Cats games like Realistic Warrior Cats that made me giggle.)
The thing I'm most curious about is whether the Warrior Cats games are written by one or two obsessed trolls, or if there is actually a whole community of them from some kind of Warrior Cats fansite where one of them stumbled over CYS one day and decided to invite all their Warrior Cats friends round to take over, which would be interesting to know but difficult to find out.
Anyway, I suppose what I'm thinking is that the problem isn't that the site has loads of Warrior Cats games... It's that the games are really, really bad. The writers are really frustrating because often people try to advice them on how to make the game better, and they just get all stroppy and don't want to hear it, 'cos they think their 1 rated games are perfect as they are. Also you get those games where somebody will write a series of Warrior Cats games where each game is only a handful of pages long, yet for some reason they'd rather spend 5 minutes on a game that leaves off with "To be continued" than put all of them together and spend 20 minutes on a game with some small amount of effort put into it.
So basically, the problem is with the writers, so people suggesting that games with a rating of 1 get auto-deleted have a good idea. Unfortunately, some of these Warrior Cats writers tend to rate their own game an 8 several times to try and boost the Player Rating, so it probably wouldn't work.
Really, I can't think of anything to recommend short of talking to the Warrior Cat game authors individually and letting them know that this isn't a Warrior Cats fansite and that we don't like the idea of the site being taken over by Warrior Cats fans and their short, poorly written games.
I'm practically falling asleep now though, so maybe I'll have something more helpful to say in the morning cheeky
Warrior Cats Games
The more points someone has, the more his rating means, so even if all the trolls upvote their stories, our voting will be much more of a "deciding factor".
Warrior Cats Games
9 years ago
My answer is going to be similar to Fords seeing as how I was a fan of the series when I was younger. Still am one even though I might not read any more of the books written by their authors.
The Warrior-Cats are a children book series, while you may debate that it is true regardless. Now with that out of the way I can give my 'rationale' so to speak.
1. While some of the stories may have been written by young people that doesn't excuse their unwillingness to fix their stories or even to write stories that were worth reading. This isn't a fanfiction.net, if they want to write crappy FF's then they can go to a site dedicated for creating FF's in general.
It is true we have to be careful not to scare people off the site but perhaps we can begin a 'warning period' where the author of a story deemed as a bad influence to the site will recieve a notice to work on his/her story more and if there is significant improvment(though small excerpts from the eventual updated version) then the story will remain until it is updated.
If there is no response/improvement then we can unpublish the story at our descretion. This is allowed in the Term of Service on the site. "ChooseYourStory.com reserves the right to monitor content on the Web site and to remove content which ChooseYourStory.com in its sole discretion..." If the community and rating system(not counting the obvious troll/friend/MA 8's) then we are within our rights to unpublish/remove their story if we want too.
This way it will be on their shoulders to improve or unpublish the story without being 'unfairly' slapped by the invisible hand so to speak.
2. It's true we have gotten dangerously close to the slippery slope before as seen with the troll-attacks but we can use that as an example of what not to do and what to do. Personally I don't see why we wouldn't be able to delete stories that are rated 1 or 2. It's obvious the active community dislikes the story and if the work is actually bad then we should delete it.
 We shouldn't have to deal with the loud-mouthed idiot who won't sit down in class but we do because it would be 'unfair' to him/her to be removed from the class and let others study in a more calm enviroment. On the internet we don't have to deal with as much buracratic stuff so we can deliver punishments far faster.
Equality on the internet is gained through effort, not by right.
3. We can't know if they will disappear or not, but that doesn't mean we should let them stay here just because we are worried they won't disappear once their stories are removed.
Now, there are a few of the Warrior Cat stories that shouldn't be deleted. I know there was one or two that was rated a 4 or 5. But we shouldn't be focusing on the 'WAIR-KAT" issue as much as we should be focusing on troll/horrible stories in general.
That's my rant at least, take from it what you will.
Warrior Cats Games
9 years ago
Weird, I might have been tagged but it didn't tell me about it.
Anyway, I have no problem with Warrior Cats games. I understand that it's a pretty well-received series (at least when judging by the amount of their books my brother owned when he was younger) and it's only natural for someone to want to make fanfiction of a series they like. However, you're correct that many of these stories are complete crap, and they're starting to drag the site down a bit. One of the reasons I stopped reading every new story that was coming out was because of shitty stories. Not neccisarily Warrior Cats specifically, simply stating that bad stories will damage the amount of new stories read as a whole.
However, I know that if I were an admin and I knew it was ok for me delete any story I didn't like, I'd get rid of a shitload of stories. I also hate when admins take advantage of their powers in order to get their own way for no better reason than they want it. So far I haven't witnessed this on the site or at least if I have it's been so small that I forgot it ever happened, even now when I'm trying to recollect. I'd like that to remain to the same, since the admins here typically have a good combination of being fair and strict at the same time.
So that leaves me with the unfortunate internal debate between keep the Warrior Cat stories and have people get turned off of reading or have the admins take down an entire subsect of storygames and possibly scare people away from the site while risking upsetting the balance of admin power we already have. That's why I would suggest that rather than having a policy of "no warrior cats" we develop a policy of "no shitty stories." If I were to personally implement this I would do it by giving a time period of a week or two for any new stories. If by the end of the time period, whatever it may be, the story keeps a rating of 2 or below we delete it. This is based on the fact that we have a maximum of 8 and so even though I'd like to delete 3s that would mean you'd have to make a 4. That gives off an air of "if it's not pretty good, we won't have it," so I'd go with a delete all 2s and below.
That's just what I would do if I had full control of the site, however. If we have to do a black-and-white choice of the two options I'd rather trust our admins with their new power than let the stories remain. With the main admins/moderators active being Seth, Flesh, 3J, and Madglee right now I figure I can trust those guys with the power.
After reading everyone else's post, it's clear that my solution was not as original as I thought XD. That's actually a good thing though, shows that it's a commonly held idea and would get some support from the site when implemented.
It helps that some of the members are either fans of the series or know better than to target a specific theme.
I'm not fond of the Warrior Cat games. Majority of the are troll games as I can see from the grammar- If they don't have time to write a proper title and write the first letter in capital, then they are obiviously trolls. Even a 10 year old has the sense to write a better grammar. But, the reason I hate them is because they clog up the site and push the better new storygames down and eliminate their chances to be read significantly. I am not saying they all should be deleted, but instead we should develope a flag option. A story which is flagged by many user would be sent to the mods for consideration a kept/deleted accordingly. *Sorry, I am on phone*
I believe WarriorCats stories should be treated as any other stories:  if they're good, they stay. If not, they are reported and  disappear.
Warrior Cats Games
9 years ago
Pretty much. We either need a report button or just deleted any stories that have 3/8 as rating (but that's affected by trolls, then again the report button can be abused to)
Just did a quick skim of the topic, no idea what Warrior Cats are, but I'm not a huge fan of unpublishing unless it hits the "low quality for a long period of time" thing, or is porn or whatever.
At the same time, i don't like the the "Random Game" thing pulling up rubbish; wonder if we should make it only pull 4+ storygames or something?
Warrior Cats Games
9 years ago
We decided on this. I think you'll be pretty satisfied with how hard it should be to get your game deleted. In effect, if the game has a single redeeming feature and is rated 2 or better, it won't be touched.
I'd say random should pull 5+ personally, but it's pretty low priority.
@alexp
I completely understand not wanting to unpublish games, but I notice you say you have no idea what Warrior Cats are... You lucky, lucky man.
Firstly, Warrior Cats is a book series about talking wild cats with names like "Ashfire" and "Bramblepaw" that live in clans with names like "Fireclan" and "Iceclan."  Second, doing a quick skim through the games (I've probably missed out quite a few here) there are at least 20 games on this site about Warrior Cats. (This is a count I did after the purge, which unpublished the majority of the worst Warrior Cats games.)
Basically, there are enough Warrior Cats games on the site to make up an entire category of games. 99% of the games have been written in the past few months and at least 90% of the games have a player rating of 4 or below, as well as a play length of 4 or below (4 being the absolute maximum, they're usually between 3 and 1.)
So to sum up, I think that the purge wasn't just done to get rid of some of the site's worst games, but also to try and prevent Chose Your Story from becoming a Warrior Cats fan-fiction website... Which sadly, it is becoming. cheeky
Warrior Cats Games
9 years ago
only 20 left after the purge? Still a lot but..... I swear I've seen ~70ish
Warrior Cats Games
9 years ago
Yeah, I think most of them got deleted in the purge. Seriously though, even with the amount of Warrior Cats games there are now, that's like... More games than the whole School Based category had when I first joined the site. So yeah, I guess 3J's options were either to purge the Warrior Cats games, or to create a new category of game titled "Kitty Porn." cheeky
Warrior Cats Games
The issue isn't directly about the butchered Warrior Cat stories, it's about low-quality stories in general here.
Warrior Cats Games
9 years ago
True, but I personally find the Warrior Cats games particularly frustrating, since the fans seem to be under the impression that CYS is actually a Warrior Cats fanfiction website. Like I pointed out in another thread, some of them have started leaving comments on non-Warrior Cat related games, telling the writers that the game should've been about Warrior Cats. cheeky
Alright, my honest opinion is this: There is nothing inherently wrong with any fandom. While there have been a lot of horrible stories made from this fandom, it could just as easily have been stories about Pokemon or My Little Pony or whatever. I've put up with a lot of truly terrible fanfiction, but that does not, by any means, mean that all fanfiction is terrible.
I've put up with a lot of disgustingly horrible Yuugiou fanfiction, but I've also seen people elevate the fandom to such artistic mastery that they really should've been the ones writing the show in the first place. So, while I have no love for Warrior Cats, I have no hatred for them, either.
My hope is that we, the members, and you, the admins, will continue to monitor, maintain, and clean up this site when necessary. There will always be trolls, there will always be bad stories, and they will take many different forms, but I feel they should all be dealt with the same way. Stories that are poor, but salvagable need guidance. Stories that are unforgivably bad or pure troll vomit should be removed. Nothing less, nothing more.
Honestly, people making such a big deal out of the fact that it's "Warrior Cats" is probably the reason we have so many of them. For trolls, you just gave them an extremely easy target to get attention. For fans or writers who like a challenge, the motive is probably "Oh, well, surely -I- could do it better."
I'm not saying ignore it, I get that it's a problem, but I am saying we need to stop blowing it out of proportion. A bad story is a bad story, regardless of the subject matter.
I hate my little pony.
Warrior Cats Games
9 years ago
Yes, yes. I'm sure you also hate Justin Beiber, and Hipsters, and emo kids, and other things that people hate because "it's cool." (Mind you, I'm not saying there aren't reasons to hate them, I'm making a point.)
It's a show intended for small children. If you can't give a valid reason for despising it that does not include bronies (which are outside the creator's control) or something else which can already be excused by it being, again, a childrens' cartoon, then you might as well be declaring your supreme loathing of Sesame Street. -_-
Warrior Cats Games
9 years ago
Yep. I did have a little giggle to myself watching you try to explain to her, "Saying "I hate My Little Pony" isn't cool. The show is meant for 5 year old girls, so you're not supposed to like it. Why would you think it's cool that you don't like a show that was made for little children? It's like saying "I hate Sesame Street."" ... And then seeing her respond with, "Yeah! I hate Sesame Street too!" cheeky
Warrior Cats Games
9 years ago
Apparently the older Sesame Street episodes from the 70s and 80s are considered unPC and not for children nowadays. They even came out with a DVD set or something called Sesame Street "Old School" which has a warning label on it.
I watched some episodes, and to be fair, it was a good show for what it is. If I was a 5 year old girl I'd watch the fuck out of it but I can't see how grown up men would enjoy something gayer than gay porn
Warrior Cats Games
9 years ago
Therein lies my point. There's nothing wrong with it for what it is and it's not the show's fault that bronies exist.
(Truthfully, I don't really give a damn that guys like it either. Whatever they're into, it's their business, I just don't want to hear about them jerking off to it.)
Warrior Cats Games
I wouldn't mind as much if it was just this guy who watched it for shits and giggles, but the fanbase as a whole consists of so much betaness that it's pathetic. I find MLP cosplaying equally creepy as clopping
