Player Comments on Julius Caesar: Stayin' Alive!

Julius Caesar: Stayin’ Alive is a good showcase of CYS’s changing standards over the years. I had it in my reading list for a while because I happen to like the source material very much, but it certainly had much to be desired for a story that was once featured.

To start with, the story structure itself was probably the biggest flaw. Many of the choices made simply did not matter. Even choices that seemed as if they would matter, such as being directly warned of the conspiracy by Brutus, were completely forgotten on the next page. A particularly annoying example that made me a bit surprised this had been featured was when Caesar has a choice to go watch the races ir speak with Brutus. If he speaks with Brutus, the page after where he goes to the races is written just as if he never had anyway.
The big attraction to CHOOSE Your Story is just that, choosing your story. If a choice is forgotten by the next page, then what was even the point of having it?
Another, different bad example of choices was when Caesar is taking a bath and gets a knock on his door. If he asks who it is, it is Cassius in disguise, but if he does not, it is a servant. Ain’t that amazing how that works.
Because of this all, there’s no real branching, just some early end links.

There were also some confusing things about the story itself, or rather, some things that showed perhaps some confusion on the part of the author.
The senate is said to be almost empty, but literally dozens of senators were in on the assassination. Add that to those who were not, and you have a full house there. Also, why were hooded men caught wandering the senate with daggers. They ARE the Senate and don’t need disguises.
I also want to point out that yond Cassius has a LEAN and hungry look, not a MEAN and hungry look, and such men are dangerous.

I did like the subject, and I thought the title was very catchy. However, this story just did not live up to my ever-smaller hopes. Check it out if you’re one of those freaks who reads reviews before story-games and are interested in an artifact from the past that, while not bad, will make you ever more grateful that CYS has EndMaster and higher standards in this season.

Seems like a pretty cool game, I just didin't like how the game's choices seem to follow no logical; the deaths are random. I mean, isn't it logical for someone especially like a recently-crowned king to ask who's coming in before alotting them passage? And if you have all these signs from various people like your wife and soothsayers to stay home, shouldn't you probably stay home?

On top of that there's inconsistencies with the story; if you don't ask who it is, the guy doesn't kill you (as one ex).

That's really the only thing that irks me about this story. When playing a CYS, it should be strategic and logical and your choice; not like attempting to traverse a minefield.

While there is a proper amount of early choices, they all lead towards the same branch and the conclusion feels too summarised. While the setup of a plot is there, act 1 is about your personal leanings and personality, which affects how the assassination will take place in act 2, it doesn't work for me. Act 1 has too little impact on the following story. Act 2 has too little groundwork to feel anything more than random, and act three is only a short paragraph leaving the reader little to work with.

The writing also clashes with the subject matter. There's a serious plot, the last days of one of the most (in)famous persons in history, but the yadda yadda's, BIG WORDS, and other immature word choices cheapened the impact of that plot. It made me not care about the world and the characters in it.

All in all, there's a good story hidden in there; it just needs a bigger wordcount and change of atmosphere to come out.

Uh... changing history in a game is fun, but isn't this a bit short? Can't we change the entire political structure of Rome? Or am I asking too much. ;)

This was pretty good, especially for a school project, but as Jordi P said I wish there had been more information about the setting and background. Do they even teach much about ancient Rome in schools anymore? I'm sure readers are going to know who Caesar is but not necessarily the details or context that led to his assassination--remember the crowd here at CYS leans pretty young.

Mostly though it was just difficult for me to get over Caesar saying, "What's up, old pal?" or thinking of someone as his 'good buddy'. :P

Decent game, although the story could do with more information about the setting. Explain why Julius Caesar is who he is and why people would want him dead and you'll have a nice educational piece

An interesting story. Could be a bit more descriptive but short and to the point. Can't say I loved it but it was okay.

I admit, I was mildy confused and bored by this for a while, but still, it was a silly game that's helping pass the boredom. :)

i love the mark about march 15 I almost blew the guy off but then I remembered thats the date of his death and that he died a king with alot of people around. It was fun would realy recommend it to someone who's bored.

Quite interesting, I liked the idea of reincarnating yourself in another person to change history, however, I would have enjoyed some strategy, being Julius Caesar it would be great to rule the Roman Empire a little!

Not really an exact way of how things were, and I think you got the wifes name wrong. Otherwise, you know how living in Rom was at that time. Pretty good work!

I'm a fan of history, and even though creative liberties are taken (a necessary decision) this story actually represents the events rather accurately. I also find some of the modern dialogue highly entertaining!

Ok, so Caesar meets Brutus and he's like, "yo, brute, d'you have smtng on your mind", and he's like "no, yo", and than he's like "c'mon tellme" and he's like "ok, dude they're going to kill you and stuff, lol", and Caesar is like "lol, ok" and than he's not going to the senate to get killed and he leaves. Even I can write a story.

Shorter than I thought it would be. It was a bit too easy for me, it only took me 2 tries to figure out how to live. But still thumbs-up from me!

lol i had this play in english as well, It is definately my favorite. We even got to og to the shakespeare museum to see it in person. Sometimes being an honors student has its benefits... Pretty fun game if you ask me, it more or less goes along with the storyline and the only reasons it doesn't is because you omitted some of it to make way for humor, which i can respect.

Pretty good, with more freedom of choice than most of the games in the category. It is, of course, very easy to die--but then again, on this premise and title, it'd be weird if that wasn't the case. And it is an interesting premise.

*spoilers* kill cas but the 3rd option seemed to lead to a better ending, even though I won either way, and why were you so harsh on people who picked the first? That seems like the worse ending in the game. I mean you had to be cold to pick that option and being killed by your soldiers would make sense, but why the rest?

I read the comment I wrote before and decided it sounded a lot harsher than intended. It was a very good story and an interesting, if brief, view of Caesar and his day, with a great title to boot.

solid story, but it lost its regal feel. also, around the senate area, it says something like Cassius starts with a C. i didnt get any thing that goes along with that. might want to look into it.

I like this game alot. it allows you to follow the book or bring your own different ending. All together you get to enjoy shakespeare with a mordern fling to it. Good for people who like to determine Caesars Death
