So, I guess this is the part where I smile and nod and pretend I know who Markiplier is… I’m not old! :’(
I guess I’ll start of by saying that the game was a lot better than I expected it to be. The whole Groundhog day theme was kind of fun, the quality of the writing was decent, and you always did a good job of setting the scene. That said, you do need to break the habit of telling your story with a long list of facts, and it was kind of weird that the game was written in past tense instead of present tense, but whatever.
Also, while I imagine that there was supposed to be some element of mystery, I kind of get the impression that you left out some vital information that only people who watched the web series would know, because towards the end, I had absolutely no idea what the fuck was going on. When writing fanfiction, you do need to keep in mind that people who’ve never seen the subject you’re writing about are going to play the game as well, so you need to maintain a healthy balance between making the game enjoyable for the fans, whilst also making sure that people who haven’t seen the subject matter can actually understand what’s happening.
Now onto the biggest flaw, and I’m afraid to say that the fact that you made this game a “trial run” and said that you’d expand on it only if it gets a lot of support kind of gives me the impression that you don’t really care much about the project. Basically, if you’re really passionate about a storygame, then you’re going to put in a lot of work and effort and write a whole, finished story regardless of what other people think of it. The fact that you just threw together a quick demo in a game about some famous youtuber kind of implies that you care more about getting positive feedback than you do about the game itself. My advice would be, don’t waste time trying to make a game that you think will be popular and instead make a game that you’re actually passionate about writing.
I definitely think you have the potential to write some decent games. You just need to put a lot more work and effort into it and write a story you really care about instead of just focussing on some random youtube celebrity in an attempt to make little fangirls squeal.
