Darkness. It surrounds you. It is all you have ever known. It is warm and soft and holds you firmly in its embrace.
You find it comforting, this dark embrace. You float here, calmly, wanting for nothing.
Sometimes you can hear distant noises from outside the darkness. The sounds of voices and music often make it through to you. You do not know where they come from.
There are two voices you hear often. One is deep and booming and full of mirth. The other lighter and more serious. They speak to each other in affectionate tones. Their voices are muffled through the darkness, but you get the impression that they are often speaking of you.
You do not know how long you have been in the darkness. All you know is that it holds you comfortingly within it, and that the voices are outside of it.
One day, suddenly, you feel the darkness contract around you. Only for a few moments, and then it returns to its usual state. Outside the darkness, you hear the lighter voice speak. It sounds different, more urgent than normal, as if excited. The booming voice replies with a similar sense of excitement.
Then the darkness contracts again, just for a few moments before stopping. This concerns you. The darkness has not done this before.
Again, there is a contraction. Outside the darkness you hear the lighter voice cry out, the sense of urgency replaced by what sounds like pain. This time, the darkness seems to be pushing you in a certain direction. You have never moved within the darkness before.
