Humble Beginnings

Folks around here call you Scratch. "Around here" isn't much to look at, or to speak of. Kobolds don't name their villages, or camps as the case may be, and travelers often mistake the stained canvas and bundles of twigs tied together roughly into the shape of huts for the local garbage dump.

You were born here as nothing and expected to die here as nothing, but as fate would have it, you, humble assistant to Cook Kook--from your tail tip right to your scaly snout--were destined for the culinary world.

It all started one typical afternoon, while you were scratching an itchy spot on the back of your neck and gazing vacantly up at some tree branches. Chief Assagg came hurrying down the path, wattles swaying. (Much like the tree branches. It was like poetry, it rhymed.)

You were so enthralled with what you were you were doing that you frankly didn't notice him till he was almost on top of you; otherwise you might have dodged off into the woods, at the speed he was going he seemed likely to be angry and looking to hit you with a stick. Though you couldn't imagine what you had done wrong, having not really done anyhing all week.

"Scratch, Scratch, there you are! Hurry and fetch Cook Kook, we have important guests to feed!"

"Oh! What kind of guests, what should I tell him?" you asked, shaken out of your reverie and honestly kind of excited now. You wonder if this will be as prestigious a moment as the time that assistant pigkeeper's fourth son paid the village a halfpenny for a clutch of fresh quail eggs, only one of which was slightly cracked.

"The generals of the Elven, Dwarven, and Human armies, here to discuss a truce to their war on neutral ground."

For a moment you can only stare, and blink your second set of eyelids. That DOES sound more important than an assistant pigkeeper, or even a regular one.

"Tell Kook to make his best dish, they will pay well if we give them a good impression. And...a bad impression, and they might kill us all." Assagg smiles as well as a kobold's inflexible lips will allow. "But I'm sure that won't happen! Cook Kook is the best we've ever had!"
