In the hungry backstreets of colonial Korea and the factory wards of Osaka, Lee Bong-chang spends years trying to sand himself down into someone the empire might accept. He takes a Japanese name, learns the right bows, and builds a fragile life out of concealment and compromise—only to discover that no amount of effort can erase what the world has already decided he is. Based on the life of the man who would later attempt to kill the Japanese Emperor, this is the story not just of an assassin in the making, but of a poor boy, a borrowed identity, and the slow, bitter collapse of survival into resistance.
