Getting him unstable requires you to have a lot of team members, because then there are more people for him to create/control and he has to use more of his power.
The fight against yourself is a mirrored reflection that does everything you do. There is no way to physically defeat him without yourself getting defeated as well, but you're not supposed to defeat him...
