On his first trip to America, Columbus takes captives with him to Spain. Among these captives is Mato's mother. Witnessing this, Mato tries to persuade his father Gaucanagari, the head of his tribe, to expel the Spaniards.
Due to lack of success, Mato turns to the head of another tribe: Caonabo. Together they attack Navidad, facing not only the Spaniards but also Guacanagari and his tribe.
