Player Comments on The Cult
The biggest challenge of the game is getting through the first two pages. I recommend that no one attempt to eat while reading, the viewpoint character (I hesitate to call him a protagonist) will do sanity damage to you IRL as he's wading through the empty pizza boxes and trash in his room and tossing back flat room temperature Mountain Dew while peeing in a plastic cup.
The only truly unrealistic thing about this story is that such an individual took the steps to leave the house to have these events happen to him at all.
There's multiple ways to get routed back through certain pages, and it's not always a completely smooth transition from the previous page, that's the only real criticism I could come up with. The writing itself is proofread well and very straightforward--very very straightforward. Ogre's style is always crystal clear about what's going on, but I do sometimes wish for a little more pizazz in sentence structure. If not for the fact it was obviously written by a human who farts a lot and has a functional sense of humor, there were some sections it might be fair to squint at and go 'beep boop?' if you didn't know Ogre as an established author here going way back.
The atmosphere within the compound is disturbing enough that you may start to feel some sympathy for dear, hapless, flabby Jorge and wish for him to come out of things unscathed...but that maaaaay not be in the cards. And while the story we did get is pretty funny, there's some actual peril of a more serious nature in play here, so there was a time or two I was wishing for a more suitable main character to do clever protagonist things while finding a way out. Because a similar plot about a less disgusting human escaping a cult compound would be a lot of fun too.
And yeesh, I have never seen an orgy tent I wanted to enter LESS.

Jorge sounds like a delightful human being and I do feel that joining a cult could be a significant improvement to the life he is living at the start of the story! By the second page I felt becoming a human sacrifice would be a significant improvement for him. Ogre describes Jorge’s life perfectly in a way that reminded me of EndMaster’s Trash (in a good way!). The environment of the town helps to explain Jorge very well and the scene at the barber shop is fun. I love the idea of the girls just abducting bald guys.
I like how the cult starts with sex and then moves on to magnets (school science classes would be a lot more interesting if they followed the same route). Hm, orgy tent or garden, tough decision. Of course, they give us Kool-Aid to drink. I figure Jorge would be best off embracing the cult life so let’s stick with the sus food and giggle at tables. And that led us to the orgy or a sort of orgy. Seems a good place to leave Jorge and talk about a happy ending. This story does give a good explanation of why cults exist and appeal to a certain kind of people; perhaps if the Democrats hosted orgies, they’d get more votes.
So, another excellent story from Ogre with good branching, original subject matter and an absorbing and interesting topic well-told with the main character very well defined (I though the opening was particularly entertaining). It might have been interesting to have developed this story further, perhaps have seen the dark side of the cult even if that would have ruined the fun and laidback nature of the story. Overall, this is another great read that I’d definitely recommend.

The snarkiest story ever --- play this and learn!
This is soo good but I will start with the bad part. This game is too short, and if you explore some path you very quickly get channelled to the same few pages. In this game this is easy to forgive as it adds to the overal deep pervading feeling of futility that is a central theme.
Now the good side: The writing is masterful. That's it, but this is enough. There is much to learn from this game here are some examples:
- The opening is one of the strongest I have seen. We start when the game the protagonist plays is disrupted in the middle of a fight because his internet cuts out.
So the emotions are immediately high, immediately there is conflict, immediately there is a relatable experience and thus you can't help but be immediately sucked into the story.
- The protagonist is an absolute loser. If the game was written in second person this might be unbearable, but the game is written in third person, and so we can watch him screw up (and gleefully so). There is nothing in the game that the protagonist does well, still you can't help but care about him. Because we start with such a low bar making any choice that is not completely embarrasing feels like character devlopment.
- The story is full of very relatble little detail, such as in the beginning when he tries to brush dorito crumbs away and only ends up brushing them deeper into a fold --- raise your hand if you haven't done that.
- The narration uses a very third person narration. Also the narrator is not 'you,' you are right there in his head all the time, creating deep immersion. Particularly during the drug scenes when his perspective becomes seriously distored this is great fun.
- The characters have memorable voices, from the screwed-up gamer speech, to a girl on the bus gushing away mindlessly, to some spaced out cult members that just mindlessly repeat some phrases. The writing captures the different speech patterns and rythms very well, which the characters very real.
So in summary this is soooo well-written that it is an absolute pleasure, I just wish there would be more of it. The premise has certainly potential for some longer arcs leading to different outcomes. Anyway I greatly enjoyed my time with this game, so hands down 8/8.

This game isn't very inviting. It doesn't immerse you in the world, and is much more like watching it happen then actually choosing the story.
Most of the options aren't really choices. If you want the true story, then it is easy. I think that if there were more choices, and it was from a first person point of view, then it would work.
Otherwise, I think that it has a good story thought, but it seems very immature, unrealistic, and the main character is annoying.

A good game for a giggle. Nothing to be taken seriously, just a nice short piece to read when you’re having a rough day.
