Not necessarily, that is what makes most books so popular. Why do you think most of shakespeare's books and plays are so popular?
Edit: Dangit Steve! Beat me to the punch! XD

If you were told that the books would end tragically before you'd read it, it wouldn't be an enjoyable. There'd be no suspense, because you know it'll end in tragedy.

Exactly, all (should) know how Romeo and Juliet is supposed to end. But does that automatically make the story bad?

Not bad. Worse, I would say.

Now, I am not saying that if you spoil a story, it cannot ruin it for you. But, I am saying that just because you know a book is a tragedy, it does not hurt the quality of the story itself. Otherwise, there would be no point in re-reading books.

It doesn't ruin the story, but I still think it worsens it. If I know what's going to happen, there's no suspense, and if I know it's a tragedy, I won't bother getting emotionally invested in characters. Also, you re-read books?

Yes! I love re-reading story games as well. I cannot count how may times I have read Dungeon Stompage.

Storygames are different, because they change when you re-read them.

I mean yeah, but still. I love getting invested in the characters each time. I love re-reading an entire series all over again, because that is how books are supposed to be.

Edit: Sorry if that wasnt clear. In my opinion, for me to tell if a book is good or not is if the story is good enough to be read again. I re-read books because good books deserve to be read however many times you or I desire. If you just read a story once, and it is a good story, regardless of genre, and you wish to read said story over again, then the author has achieved his goal.
