A place to sit back, hang out, and make monkey noises about anything you'd like.

So I just saw this and it was slightly different than I thought it would be. Wasn't expecting the movie to have Emma Watson as a villain protagonist.

Emma Watson as a villain? *is going to watch*

She's not really a traditional villain that you might be thinking about, and apparently some people interpret her character a different way.

However given what she continues to do in the film and what she ultimately does, I see her as one which in turn made the movie more enjoyable.

What did she do in the movie? (I don't mind spoilers, I think.)

Emma goes to work for The Circle which is the typical evil monolithic Apple/Google/Microsoft corporation though obviously it doesn't portray itself that way.

Tom Hank is this Steve Jobs type guy who makes a lot of speeches about how they're changing the world and only want to make it a better place. The corporation emphasizes this very social community where everyone is connected with each other and basically everyone has to go around being happy and interactive with their co-workers even when not officially working. (Already sounds like a nightmare)

Anyway Emma is sort of apprehensive about all this at first, but even when she’s told that The Circle is doing stuff like planning on placing camera every where in the world and installing chips in kids, she not only starts embracing the corporation she actually starts coming up with MORE ideas on how to make The Circle more intrusive in everyday life.

Now there is a point where something happens and you think it’s going to be her whole “My god what have I done” moment, and it sort of plays out that way, but with a minor twist.

While she does indeed backstab Tom Hanks and the other evil corp guy by exposing all their info to the world, but she basically just takes over their role by making the world completely under surveillance all the time and destroying the whole concept of privacy altogether which is what The Circle was sort of trying to achieve in the first place.

Lel. Is that how it ends? Hypocrisy?

It’s sort of a case of Emma becoming such a perfect believer in the goals that Tom’s corp was trying to achieve (Complete transparency of everyone everywhere) that she managed to do better since she had no more secrets and could truly lay it all on the line and have people follow her, whereas Tom couldn’t really do that since he was involved in a lot of shady business behind the scenes even if he was outwardly charismatic.

So she didn’t start out as an outright villain protagonist (Part of her motivation was also to help her parents), but she ultimately became one.

That sounds like a very interesting concept I've seen fluttering about a bit before. Did you like it fairly well? Well done?

I thought it was okay, I mean I went in expecting it to be the typical storyline of her going to work for an evil corporation and then she finds out they're doing shady stuff, and then she's trying to figure out how to stop them. So the fact that she turned out to embrace everything it was trying to achieve instead was a nice change of pace at least.

Part of it also reminded me of this Black Mirror episode where everyone is connected and has to go around being friendsly in order to get more likes for their social status. (Can't remember the name of that episode)
