A Hero's Odyssey

I put off reading this for a long time. A really long time. I expected something inspired by The Odyssey that makes use of this medium, here being interactive fiction. Unfortunately this is mostly a diluted version of the The Odyssey, told from the perspective of a less interesting character, in a generally linear fashion.

The writing is generally competent with small errors every few paragraphs. The most common one was probably using "to" in the place of "too." I'm no editing genius myself so I'm very forgiving of that sort of thing.

I'm less forgiving of awkward phrasing and stiff dialogue, which both are present now and again. Those problems are also more difficult to fix than spelling errors. It has been almost a decade since publishing, so going back and reworking this story by this point would be strange.

I'm glad that this storygame is still around, because anyone who reads A Hero's Odyssey should take a look at Romulus' more recent writing and appreciate how much a writer improves with effort over time.

I don't really think this classifies as edutainment. I would consider it more of a fanfiction than anything. At the very least, it could count as historical. The only bit where you learn anything is in the beginning. Other than that, it is a discount Odyssey, like the kind of movie you would find at a dollar general bargain bin.

Beautiful, the best story I've read in a while, the island was my favorite part. Definitely recommend this story.
