Dust off a seat and discuss a good book here...you do read, right?

I have like 9 of those books and just started reading them again - always frustrating when you start reading a series and you get to the last book, wait for the next one, and finally forget important things. So I started reading again from the beginning, and can look forward to 10, 11, and 12? Unfortunately Robert Jordan apparently decided to die before finishing the very last one, but I hear it's going to be released - I'm hoping he finished it completely and they're just wrapping it up into a bound book, and his wife isn't finishing it from his notes or something...

Here's what I heard:

Jordan knew he was dying at least two years before it actually happened; he had a terminal illness.  So he told everyone that the next one was going to be the last, even if it had to be over a thousand pages long.  He at the very least had a complete outline of the book, and supposedly told several people how he wanted it to end.  He also had plans for other books about his world.  At a comic con, he actually read some of the last book to some fans.  The last one is supposed to be published sometime in 2008, but as of right now, there's no release date listed in my store's database.

(Stephen King, however, has a new book coming in January.)

Okay, cool. He must have felt so accomplished to, on his death bed, know that he contributed such a wonderful series that would live on after him. I need to discover a new element or something.

That's awesome news (not about his death, I hadn't heard about that) but about an end to the series in sight at last! I started collecting the books in April 1992, and I didn't realise it would take 16 years to get to the end of the story. Originally someone had said it would be a trilogy - or just four books, but it got bigger! I own most of the books, but I stopped reading back at book 9, because every time a book came out, I would sit down and read it all from the beginning again, and after doing that 9 times, I realised I could be doing it another 9 times before the ending arrived, so I stopped reading. Now I look forward to getting the last book, then sitting down and reading them all from beginning to end!

Sword of Truth books are great too! I had the same issue - it just kept going, so I stopped at book 5. If that series ends, I can look forward to buying the rest, then sitting back for a read-a-thon epic!

I probably shouldn't complain about series length though. In Battletech (my favourite sci-fi universe), there's like 63 novels in the first series (divided into trilogies and self-contained stories) and 29 books in the second series (mechwarrior dark age). Luckily they're only about 250 - 300 pages long on average, instead of epic fantasy books with their 700 - 800 pages per book.

the sword of truth is finished. he published the last book last month. dont have a clue what he is going to start writing next. though they are supposed to be doing a movie on the first book pretty soon. so he will probably work with that first.

I'm not sure if I'd watch a movie made on the books. I'm a bit squeemish about violence, and in starting to read the first book again, I hadn't remembered how highly gruesomely violent the books were - I had to skip over some of the scenes with the main bad guy in them, they were so gory. Of course, if they skipped over some of the gruesomeness when making the movie, then I'd probably watch it, because I like the rest of the story.

( i wish it were possible to edit posts instead of having to double post if I forget something! I'm always forgetting to type things)

I wasn't talking about the wheel of time - no problem with the violence there, I meant if they made a movie of the 'sword of truth' series.

Oh, I was going to say. I am almost finished with the first book again, and I didn't notice any gruesome violence. Heheeh. Fleshy, I don't think he'll be writing anything else, since he died.

wait, Terry Goodkind is dead? or Robert Jordan? apparently i made a mistake by bringing in Sword of Truth into this thread lol. now its confusing.

from what im understanding, Robert Jordan is dead right? But i was talking about Terry Goodkind. Goodkind wrote Sword of Truth Series. he should still be doing new things.

I've never heard of these books.

Robert Jordan is dead, Terry Goodkind lives on.

Don't care for either of those series myself. I gave Jordan four chances, perhaps I should give Goodkind a second chance...
