Dust off a seat and discuss a good book here...you do read, right?

A great two-book series.  The sequel did not dissapoint and Scott Westerfeld really delivered. I absolutely LOVE these books.   The Last Days is so cool and  there are so many elements to it that you don't get til you read the authors note at the end and yeah its just great.

Anyone read the Risen Empire by him?  I really want to.

October really liked that book, too. (Peeps, I mean.)

Yeah, it really is excellent. Westerfeld is one of my favorite authors. He combines a great plot, realism and a very good prose style.

I love this book(s, I like Peeps more). And Scott Westerfeld is my favourite author. Has been for a rather long time, when I first picked up Peeps a few months after it came out. Great book. He has many great stories (but I couldn't finish the Uglies series because it was far too repetitive by the time Specials was out). A smart man, very relative to today's time. Finally got my hands on The Midnighters series after ages of looking. Reading them now and loving them.

Oh, and thanks Seth for making that reference. I didn't think you'd know/remember that. Just goes to show.

Hey, I work at a book store. It's my job to remember which books people said they liked, and which ones they say are boring.

Mhm, I'll go back to bookstores where they can competently suggest books for me.

It's  not my fault people have unreasonable expectations.  They come in and say "I want a book for my son.  He's ten."  And that's all they give me.  Or "My brother likes fantasy."  It's a big freakin' category, people.  Some readers are capable of liking both David Eddings and Simon R. Green, but some people aren't.  I need a little more to go on.

Seriously, though, tell me what you like, and I'll give you suggestions.

I can't describe the genre I like....  modern fantasy?

Westerfeld, MacHale, etc.

Does it have to be a male protagonist?  If not, you might consider:

Poison by Chris Wooding, Tamsin by Peter S. Beagle, or Abarat by Clive Barker.

Other ideas:

The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub, the whole freakin Dark Tower series by SK

Simon R. Green's Nightside series, Snake Agent by Liz Williams

(Of course, you'll probably hate them all. . .)

I met Clive Barker a few years back, amazing individual.  Although, slightly creepy.  I happened to have his book on me at the time; which was very lucky and I got it signed.

And no, although I prefer male singers and musicians, its interestign to read from both points of view.

Yeah, I hear that pretty much is a perfect description of Barker.  Amazing, yet slightly creepy.  Which book did you get signed?

Uggh what was it called.

The never house or something.  No thats not it...

The one where the boy goes to the house where there are only four days in the year and he comes back and everyone else has aged but he can't find his way back to the house when he has his parents, etc.
