Dust off a seat and discuss a good book here...you do read, right?

Sorry- wouldn't let me reply to post.

It's all right, but I feel like the base plot is kind of a rip-off of Battle Royale.

Still haven't read it. Would you recommend?

I'd recommend Battle Royale first, only because it was the precurser to the hunger games. I haven't read the books, so I don't know their quality, but the movie is good. FYI: Its japanese with english subtitles and my rating is 87/100.

You're recommending me a prequel that you've never read to a book you've never read because you gave a subtitled movie an 87? Interesting.

Re: Hunger Games

It not a prequel, sorry. I meant it inspired the hunger games, and what, subtitled movie suck?

I am of that opinion.

Sorry to disagree. In fact, I put the subtitles on whenever I can, even on English movies.

Anyway, I recommend the Battle Royale manga, for sure.

The movie also inspired Kill Bill vol. 1, if you're into that sort of thing. The girl that plays Gogo got famous for being in Battle Royale.

To clarify, subtitles aren't what ruin it, it's movies in foreign languages that I can't understand with subtitles that I'm not a fan of. To clarify, it's not that I'm not a fan of them, just that I think that two equally good movies, the movie in my language will be more pleasurable to watch for me.

By Battle Royale, are you referring to that, I think, Japanese book/movie, where they rounded up all the kids because they were a-holes, and made them kill eachother?... If so, I did enjoy that movie very much. haha  Watched it, subbed, of course.

Anyways, this Hunger Games is a book or manga?

Yes, thats the one. Also, The Hunger Games are books.

3j- totally understand your point. It's a very reasonable position. A subtitled movie is more like an auto-scrolling kinetic novel than a regular film.

I watch a lot of Japanese film, and especially for some anime, dub versions are notorious for mangling the dialogue to fit the screen action. Also, you get purists who want to hear what the "real" actor is supposed to sound like.

And yes, Hunger Games and Catching Fire are the two books currently out in the series. Battle Royale is a manga, I think it's 13 vols? And a film.

Also, the Steve Austin movie "The Condemned" is almost exactly a Battle Royale ripoff, except instead of cute high-schoolers, it's professional wrestlers playing convicts that try to kill each other.

(Hey, I'd watch a movie where Chiaki Kuriyama killed Steve Austin.)
