Dust off a seat and discuss a good book here...you do read, right?

The Casual Vacancy

So, I heard today online that JK Rowlings new book is called the casual vacancy, without much of a synopsis given. I read up about the book, and here is the denials i got---

"When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock."

"Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war."

"Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…Pagford is not what it first seems."

"And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with ..."

What do you think? Will this be a hit, or a failure? Would it be a series you believe, or a standalone book? Just curious guys!

My hunch is that it'll just be a one-off book, not a series. I haven't read the Harry Potter books in years now, but I'll be looking forward to this anyway. I'm surprised she named the character Barry considering how similar it sounds to Harry.

I guess with the success or failure part you would have to be talking about either popularity-wise or money-wise. In my expectations, the money will be good for her because everyone will remember Harry Potter (especially with a protagonist named Barry :P) so they'll buy the book just because she wrote it. Popularity-wise, though, we have to wait and see.

I agree with oct. It sounds like a one book type of deal. I will give it a chance because of the name attached. Hopefully she does a good job with this book.

It's not like she needs more money though, but yes lots of people, myself included, will buy it just because she wrote it. At the moment I'm more interested in CoS coming to pottermore though.

The main character isn't Barry, he's dead. So, yeah...
