Dust off a seat and discuss a good book here...you do read, right?

I would imagine that a lot of people have heard of Anne of Green Gables?  And, so, by extension, have heard of L.M. Montgomery, the woman who wrote that novel as well.  Anne of Green Gables has been translated into many languages and has been well loved for over a century.

Oddly enough, I would not consider it the best of her works.  In fact, a lot of her lesser known stuff is really her best.

So, I'm curious if anyone has read anything else by her, or even Anne of Green Gables, for that matter.

Heard of the book, never read it. As for the author, I just found out who it was seconds ago.

Heh.  At least you're being honest about it. :)

Anyhow, Anne of Green Gables is a character that is often referred to as a good symbol of childhood innocence and the sweetness of youthful nature.  It's the kind of thing one might call, heart warming, though a lot of it is very 'slice of life' for the time and place it is set in.

However, a lot of her later works take a more critical view of the society the author lived in.  As well, her writing improves in her ability to weave description in with the rest of the stories instead of writing them as separate paragraphs in huge chunks.  She also exhibits a lot more wit and subtle humor in her later works.

With so many people now wanting to read about sex, violence, and thrills, I sometimes fear that authors like L.M. Montgomery will slowly disappear from the shelves.

But they will live on... In ebooks

I meant more that there will be no interest, and people won't even think to read them, no matter the format.  I was using 'shelves' metaphorically.

Have you no idea of how honestly annoyed I am that the lameness of simple Poe-inspired thrillers rise from Hollywood Indies rather than the much deserved attention towards the individuality and pioneering authorship of Mr. Howard Phillips Lovecraft? Has anyone seen a great movie, or great attention or reference paid to ANYTHING in the famous world at large other than Edgar Allan Poe works flapping themselves about like grounded fish? E.A.P. that's all you ever here about other than obscure vague and often unintentional references. How sad it is that Lovecraft has fallen into the hands of individual fans rather than rising into a great legacy like that of Poe. Montgomery had her tributes after death, yet all Lovecraft has been able to achieve is a free gravestone, a film festival no one hears much about, and several role-playing games, aside from Cthulhu, whom he only used as a VAGUE PLOT DEVICE in any other story but Cthulhu's own being an internet meme of much obscurity. How sad, how very sad it is. Damn you pulp magazines, for sapping him of his royalties and stripping him of a wider-spread publication. How much I'd rather be reading his works than reciting The Raven for my literary classes...
