Sabres of Infinity: https://www.choiceofgames.com/user-contributed/sabres-of-infinity/

Haven't played a Choice of game in a long time and don't even really think of them except to mock them once in awhile. But this one was recommended to me and it's actually really good?  Low fantasy with something like Napolean-era technology, being part of a realistic battle campaign where strategy and tactics and common sense definitely matter? You play a low ranking nobleman who would make sense as the main character of the story being told, and I haven't completed it yet, but so far there's no romance option in sight? Yes please.

Anything similar on the site for those of you more familiar with it?

I've played part of that game before, but I can't think of anything on this site that is similar in terms of setting and strategy. I would love to see someone write one though.

Sabres is a "Hosted Games" game, and not a "Choice of Games" game per se. Two labels from Choice of Games (the publisher). If you don't like the genderswap options and/or romance that CoG is known for, check out the Hosted games.

And yes, I realize that doesn't help you find "more like Sabres," but since I haven't actually played it yet... ;P

Had a proper look around the site now, and there's a lot more hosted games than I realized. Too bad there's no easy way to tell which are rubbish, but most have demo chapters at least.

I guess I'll just start with more by the same author. So, mech piloting it is...

*Hosted Games

Personally, I enjoyed the "Heroes Rise" Trilogy. A new series by the same author, "Versus", is out, so that one too.
