Only 84 stories in the Sci-fi section?

I know we're all nerds here. We can do better than that, shame on us.

I guess I really do need to dust off my android story one of these days. I'm able to write little bits and pieces at work now, I'm hoping this means I can keep chipping away at projects and hopefully conquer my chronic writer's ADD enough to start posting things once in awhile.

Only 54 School-based. Not even sure why that's a category TBH, surely most of them would fit under "Modern Adventure"

Cause senpai stories need a category.

'School based' I've always assumed was meant for Harry Potter style games or else stuff like all those visual novel dating games. I've seen other sites where it gets it's own genre too, it's A Thing for some people apparently.

Sci fi I was just surprised by. I'd never really noticed the numbers before, I was just scrolling down the list and it's like wow, that's it? I'd have figured it would be up there with Fantasy in popularity.

A lot of the ones that we do have there have pretty solid rating and a good length, though, so quantity over quality is nothing to complain about.

I can enjoy pretty much any style of speculative fiction, but sci fi tends to be near the bottom for me, in most cases. A good sci fi is just hard to make plausible if you put to much focus on the science...

Star Wars VII was just cringe worthy in that regard. A weapon that eats the sun? And no one dies a horrible icy death? And you charge it twice? And still no one dies a horrible icy death? WHERE ARE ALL THESE SUNS COMING FROM?

This obligatory rant has now concluded, please carry on.

I think they were just powering it with energy from the sun. Which would weaken it considerably but not destroy it all in one go.

There. Now the movie makes perfect scientific sense. :)

(Space opera is it's own genre, you have to cut it some slack in the science department. The focus is drama and action and adventure and you're supposed to handwave all the ridiculous tech stuff away with 'Umm, a wizard robot did it?)

Fantasy is easier to make shit up as you go along. You can always fall back on "a wizard did it" if you can't quite explain something.

Scifi tends to need at least some "Star Trek babble" to work, otherwise it's just science fantasy (Star Wars) rather than science fiction.

Of course going the Post Apocalyptic route is one way of going scifi without needing to go into too much detail. (Radiation did it!)
