Not sure how many fans of interactive fiction there are here, but Anchorhead by Michael Gentry is a game I have some really good memories of. It was the first IF game I seriously made a point to playing to completion and figuring out all the puzzles without resorting to a walkthrough, and that was because the writing and the city to explore with the Lovecraftian mystery to unwind and the character and her husband's predicament were just enthralling. Even fifteen years later I can still picture certain locations as clearly as if I'd seen them in a movie instead of a text game.
It's actually the game's twenty year anniversary now and a new, illustrated version is up on Steam for $10. The entire thing has been polished and revised with new puzzles and other content added.

Obviously I bought it immediately and it would be a cool thing for any other fans of the genre to support.
The old version is still right here to be downloaded or played online. It still holds up really well, although if text games themselves are something you're completely unfamiliar with... hell, I'd still recommend it. The puzzles are brutally hard by the pussy hand holding standards of IF today, but all you have to do is type help for pretty clear instructions on HOW to play, and exploring and figuring out the rest for yourself is half the fun. Hell, I actually envy anyone getting into this for the first time.
