Captain Kidd's Fate

Interesting start and setup for the story. I like the idea of trying to escape Kidd’s fate! I was a little confused on the first page when I read that I was William Kidd in Manhattan and for a second thought I was going to end up being Billy the Kid!

I like the setup on the first page, setting up the background for the story. It is, perhaps, a little bland in that while it does give all the facts, there’s not a lot more to it. It might be even more powerful if it were to contain more emotional information and more detailed descriptions about the setting or even the passion for sailing. This theme seems to continue through the story where it does an excellent job of providing factual information, but few emotions and descriptions that would help draw the reader further into the story.

As for the story, while it may have some excellent historical information in it, I don’t see any choices at all. Even when there’s two choices to select, they clearly lead to the exact same next step without apparently having any effect on the story at all. The choices setup in this way mean that there are not really any choices at all. I appreciate the attempt to build some options, but when they don’t affect the story, it is usually pretty obvious.

And as I reached the end of the story, the story was quite clear that I really didn’t have any choices and it really didn’t matter what I did in the story or what choices I selected. No matter what it was going to end the same way. That just disappoints me a bit because this simply becomes a linear story and not a CYOA at all. I liked the factual information at the end, but I think this would have been much more fun if there were some combination of choices that would actually lead to a different result! The last page could still be the same, but I feel mis-led by the opening that challenged me to attempt to avoid hanging, but clearly there was no actual way to do that.

Would have hoped for some way to have an alternate ending, but this wasn't bad. A little short, though. I could have done with some more piracy shenanigans, but not bad.

I tried several paths and got hanged every time. The historical context of the story was great. Good Job.
