I'm an indie developer working on my first game: http://www.underbytestudios.com/heroes-guard/

It is a gamebook that combines CYOA books with RPG mechanics. Because I love MTG and other card games, I also threw in card-combat!

I'm mainly on this site to get some feedback on some of the writing, as I found out its pretty tough and I'm not so great at it... this is a problem since the game revolves around writing!!

Looking for feedback on odd Gamebook on 10/16/2015 1:14:52 AM

So I've been working on my own interactive fiction for the past year (full-time), and am about to reach "Beta" status. I'm nervous as heck to let real IF fans play it, but figure I need to sooner than later. The thing I'm worried about is that it is not your traditional interactive fiction / gamebook.

For one, there are a decent amount of graphics and animations to accompany the story telling. But perhaps the most odd part is the mini-card game that is used for combat. So I'm here... to see if folks hate it or love it.

If you are interested, sign-up is here.

If you just want to know more about the game, there is some basic information on my site. Or feel free to ask away!

Thanks guys!

It was very long ago, but I think I just got through the first 2 books.

Never finished them all, but loved what I did read!

Hero with 1000 faces on 6/11/2015 1:08:18 AM

So the book The Hero with 1000 Faces is often sited as the most referenced book in all of literature (book or movie). So I picked up a copy to see what it was about!

Turns out the book was written in the 40's and hasn't been updated since... so it can be a bit hard to swallow for your average (or for me: below-average) reader.

But... I found another great book that recaps the book with a more modern take and have been actually enjoying it: The Writers Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers.

Anyone else have any good reads that help to improve ones writing?

Fan of MTG here! Solforge is pretty good, but lacks anyway to "come back" from a bad situation (aka wrath of god). I'll be odd one out here: Not a fan of hearthstone.

Excited to share - someone blogged about me! on 4/24/2015 4:13:19 PM

Thanks so much!

I work by myself at home... it's been nearly 9-10 months now. It's just nice to have these small communities (like you guys) to share things with! And nice to know that someone (Lloyd) out there has interest in what I'm doing!

So excited to share:

Someone that I follow is Lloyd of gamebooks. He is a gamebook author himself and very involved in the small niche community. I had always planned on writing to him when the game was further along - and was so surprised and excited when I woke up one day to him contacting me first!

Randomization and Replaybility: Prologue on 1/22/2015 7:33:30 PM

Yay! :) Inspiration to press forward!

Randomization and Replaybility: Prologue on 1/21/2015 6:19:59 PM

Thanks!

I hope all these random snippets and things pay off... its a crap-ton of work. I know most IF simplify present all the options or only hide them if you don't have a prerequisite - this would require multiple play-throughs to see everything (which is the intent).

I could see some folks being annoyed by it though, or the possibility they would see some of the same randomization on the next game.
