The Investigatory Powers Bill

What the hell is/was it? Some people on the Nationstates forums got really up in arms about it over the summer and then the uproar disappeared. I thought it was kind of a relief, knowing that the people who make fun of us for having psycho politicians also have their fair share, and that the country dystopia novels have been warning us about for decades was trying to "Abolish privacy" or whatever the scary thing was. I'd like to get the full story, but the only thing I can find on google is either legal jargon or highly simplified shit that looks too much like fearmongering to take seriously. Does anyone have some sort of description that's a good middle-ground, or is the bill really that awful?

If it is a bill being considered by the U.S. Congress it is really awful. Yes, really.

So, the thing they're doing to cope with the "Snowden-era" is the same thing as the thing we had to prevent Snowdens with, except more people can look at it?... Don't watch porn in the UK, I guess.

You should've known it was going to become a dystopian horror story the moment they took away your right to watch face-sitting. It's too late to revolt now.

Nah, only the government, but now they're being more honest about what they're doing. They're not going to pull an NSA and say "we only see your phone calls, haha we totally don't record you phone calls."
