Surviving School

I’m not a huge fan of the first page being titled, “The First Page.” I know, the story was written back in 2006 and “those were different times” and all, but still, I’d prefer it start out with an actual setting and place. At the same time, I did like the addition of the alarm clock image. I was hoping that would continue throughout the story, but perhaps not.

The first few sentences are a bit short and choppy. I’m not sure if that was the intent here, but it makes the reading a bit more difficult and sets a different mood. Then the fourth wall is broken at the end of the first page. These different and changing bits at the start sort of put the reader off-balance for the rest of the story. At this point the reader isn’t sure if they should get immersed in the story, or if the entire story is just going to be a joke. Following one path to avoid the story clearly enforces that idea. It is one thing to provide that quick outlet and free point to the reader, but this one is a bit silly.

The style of the writing is a bit jarring as well. While it tries to remain active, it does wander back and forth from active to internal thoughts to a narration-style passage. This makes it difficult for the reader to really get a feeling for what’s happening in the story. If it was all one setting, the reader could really involve themselves more and feel like they are part of the story.

The action through the story was, well, a bit random. Of course, I’m sure that was the point of this story. So if you don’t like lolrandom, you’re likely not going to be a fan of this story. It’s not totally random, but there are certainly some random options and actions. After all, after shaving your teacher’s head, punching her in the face, and watching her jump out the window, I’m not sure the class day is just going to continue on as if nothing happen. Heck, in one path two different teachers jump out windows and the lunch lady is stabbed in front of everyone – but class just continues on.

I did manage to win the game, though I’m not sure the school survived the day. It’s not a horrible story, but the pages are a bit short. There do appear to be a good number of options, even if many of them really do appear random. Thank you for sharing this story with the site.

This was a bit random, but ok

It felt like a LolRandom story but it was slightly too nonsensical at times like when the teachers suddenly start to try and kill the students. It was funny but in future, cut down on the randomness.
