I'm sure this has already been asked, and answered. Possibly even on multiple occasions. I'm also sure that if I would read more into it I would already have an answer.

I'm just not that patient wink

So, I was wondering, after playing around with the editor and not being able to figure it out...

Is there a way to change the score and/or variables by clicking a link AND have the changes stay if the player decides to hit the back button? I would like to figure out how to keep your score lowered if you choose to go back and pick a different link.

If this has already been discussed and nobody feels like repeating themselves, could somebody please link me to where I can read it so I don't have to search for it. With my attention span that could take forever and I'll NEVER get it figured out.

It automatically undoes it when you go back if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, if someone hits the go back button or the backspace key, everything resets to as it was before the last link was clicked.

However, if they 'go back' via a Previous Page Link, nothing is reset.

I'm not sure about the "Go Back" link that comes up when you have no links on a page though. I'm inclined to beleive that this is just a 'Previous Page' link in disguise...

I think he means something different to what you think. Say you had a page that went:

There's a dragon that breaths fire at you.

Health: 20

  • Run
  • Jump

Say that if you chose jump, the dragon hit you and you lost 5 health, putting it to 15. How could you set it so that if someone pressed the back button on their browser or the go back button, the score would stay at 15

You can't, because it automatically undoes whatever you did if you go back.

Makes sense.

Well that sucks. I guess the only thing I can do is HOPE that nobody goes back.

Well it's the internet browser doing it if I'm not mistaken, not the storygame lol.

Go back or not, the reader will do whatever they think is more fune at the time, so it really doen't matter. I'd rather allow someone to go back than to have them get too annoyed and quite out of the game.

If I can figure out the hidden link variables, then I guess I can make it so that a link can be used only once, then disappears when inactive, but is replaced with a new one. So if you choose to go back, you can no longer keep the score you WOULD have gained. In the mean time, you have no idea that going back is draining your score (unless you don't take the original path again).

Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with people going back and taking a different route. That's half the fun of playing the games. I just wish there was an easier way to penalize the score for people so they can play repeatedly to try to beat the old score without losing points for previewing alternate paths.

Even if you make a link only usable once, I'm pretty sure using the back button will make it usable again.

Tis true. the Back button completely resets everything to before the link was clicked. There's no way around it and it's a browser thing on top of site-based. Alt Arrow Keys will work in most browsers as well as the backspace key.
