Page Titles: To be or not to be?

Why are page titles always on when gamebooks never have them? WHY do we have to have them? I mean for reading, not organisation, but it should stay in the editor. A lot of people now get the titles to do the storytelling. That never works out.

I understand what you are saying...

They could be in the middle of the story

Title: The Guy moved to the Forest
Description: and he realized that he had forgotten his flashlight.

Its so annoying. What needs to be done is that we keep the page titles, however, the author is given a checkbox on whether he wants the title shown to the player of the game. Because face it, we as authors need the titles to know what page it is, but the players do not.

Sure, sometimes the titles are just the name of the link the player clicked on to get there, but sometimes they're important.

Like, for example, in a more game-oriented storygame, the page title could be the name of the room/area that the player is currently in.

So what if people use the page title as part of the story?

I think solo's idea is good, though- perhaps the titles could be optional.

I agree. In the Storygame Properties section there should be a check box saying:

Titles
If this box is unchecked, players will not be able to see the page titles.

Or something like that. The default should be keeping the titles on though.

Yes.

That is good, have it as a global option

but you can ALSO have it on every page, with the default being what is checked in the global options, because sometimes you need page titles....

If you have read Joe Dever's CYOAs or most others, they only have the page number at the top.

(Joe Dever's books are posted on www.projectaon.org)

Well, isn't that partly because they're books?  I mean, in a printed CYOA, you kind of *need* to have page numbers, so people can tell where to go. . .

I think it's good to have them in the editor, so you can glance down the screen, and tell what the pages are about, to find one you're looking for. I'd make the title have the same text as the action/option the player just clicked on. That way, it reminds them of what they are doing at the top of the page, while the page text continues the story. I do hate it when the title and the page text are part of the same sentence though, as in the example earlier on this page. I suppose it isn't necessary to have the titles displayed at all when playing the game, unless someone wanted a page to have a particular heading at the top, and they could just do that by changing font size and bolding a sentence  within the page text.

Should have the option to disable all or any page titles in your story or enable them.
