This feature was rejected 6/27/2012: Fun, yes, but this would be a PITA to implement.

Note:
This feature was originally accepted on Jul 24 2005 6:16PM, but was subsequently demoted to "New" in The Feature Wishing Well Clean-out.

The acceptance comments were This would be fun.

Deven gave me an idea ... I think it would be possible for us to include music in the games. The biggest hurdle we had before was that the music would repeat each time you clicked a new page. But I think I know how to fix that ...

As a player, when you came across a page that had music on it, a little tiny window would popup that would play the music. If you closed the window, it would ask "DO YOU WANT TO DISABLE MUSIC POPUPS FOR THE REST OF THIS GAME?" If you disabled the popup window (or had popup blocking software on), the pages with music would have a little music icon that you could click on to open the window again.

As an author, you would be given three choices for each of your pages: DO NOTHING, CHANGE SONG, or STOP CURRENT SONG.

CHANGE SONG - You would select a song from the library. When the player visited the page, the song would be changed to whatever you selected (unless it was already playing the song)

STOP - This would stop the music when the player landed on that page.

DO NOTHING - If a song is already playing when the player lands on the page, do nothing. IF nothing is playing, keep it that way.

Thoughts? One thing we would need is freeware MIDI songs.

I was just thinking that. It's sort of a pain to have to keep another window, copy it, and paste it since you'd have to minimize your game to do so. Yep. That would be cool.

I know that there are some midis at a site for RPG Maker 2k3 at a site where you can download it.

What about WAVs and MP3s for climaxes and action scenes? I used some MP3s in "May the 28th: A New Beginning".

There is this thing called copyright.  Alex P. dosen't want to spend money on music.  Would you want music with words?  I wouldn't.  It spoils the game.  (Imagine if somebody made a game based on just listening to music)  Background music would be best.  No words.

Not all music cost money you, like this song from the abandonware psx game, Thrill Kill. I would love to put this in one of my action or horror/thriller games: http://js-productions.com/thrillkill/audio/crawl.mp3

I don't think, many people would care...I mean the game is DEAD, never too be brought back, because the company that made it was bought by EA, and then the game was released by, appearlently, a member of the company for a psx iso to download, EA thought the game would ruin their image, so they said no to releasing it. The music is by contagian, I don't know, do they still make music.

Well, they still have their site so I guess they do. But the songs from thrill kill are listed as mp3s so it must not be illegle. Plus some of the songs from thrill kill are listed as unreleased...I wonder why? hehheh.

I dun think you get it....  There are three kinds of music.

1. Copyrighted -Non-downloadable.  (Such as The blackeyed peas, or Green day) You must have on of their albums to listen to them.

2. Copyrighted -Downloadable.  These are most of the shit you fin on google, you can download them and use them for personal use.

3. Non-Copyrighted -Downloadable (royaltee free).  These are a very small percentage of songs you find anywhere.  They dont care if you use them for anything, they are what we want.

The song crawl.mp3 is on the bands official site. So I don't think they mind you downloading it.

Music!

Yes but they would mind if you started putting it on a site.  So its a #2.

Music!

Oh okay...darn, I like the thrill kill music to.

Unless it says royaltee free on the site, its a #2

Here are some Public Domains that are found on a list in Building A Web Site for Dummies (2nd Edition).  This list was made in '04 so I don't know how good it it.  There might be some video sites here also.  I have not checked any of them.

www.cpdl.org
www.sheetmucic1.com/NEW.GREAT.MUSIC.HTML
www.lsvideo.com
www.pdinfo.com
pdmusic.org
www.retrofilm.com
www.archives.gov/research_room/media_forumats/film_sound_vido.html
www.virtualsheetmusic.com/
www.web-helper.net/PDMusic

I believe that this would fit under the catagorey of #3 according to JJJ-thebanisher.

Great finds ...

... though, too bad a lot of it is sheet music (i.e., just printed notes that u have to play on a piano or something). Maybe I'll download the sheet music and record me playing it :-)

What do you expect?  They were listed in a book.  I didn't even know if the sites existed. I did put them here though because I thought it might be helpful.

Alexp, a music feature would be great! If you're worried about copyright, just have people include a copyright/disclaimer notice on their story's main page saying who the track belongs to, and affirming that it is royalty free, or produced by themselves, so that they have the right to use it. If it was not royalty free, purchased for online use, or produced by themselves (or friends) then you just stop them from having the story published until they remove the copyright breaking music. You can always specify in the website's Terms of Service that story writers will be held accountable for misuse of media, and not yourself, to cover yourself in case someone did break a copyright law.

Great idea, I'll find many uses for this. Maybe sound effects could be used as well, like when you click on a link.

Why are we posting on an accepted suggestion???

Because it is not completed yet. We can still post to differ the feature (as in add-on a suggestion).

Also, are we able to record our own songs (can't remember if I already posted this), or do they have to be MIDI? I've got a few Battle Music riffs up my sleeve.
