Storygame Ideas

I'm deciding to try to actually make a storygame and finish it, but I really want to do well and make a detailed, interactive game. I was thinking of making a game with stats and relationships with people (friendships, enemys, etc. based on stats). I was thinking of adding battles but I don't really know how to do that. Does anyone have any ideas on what kind of stat based storygame they would like?

It's not really a how to question, I mean, you can answer it if you want.

I have no experiences with stats and stuff like that. But those members have.

I'd honestly recommend you not do this.

Starting something overly ambitious like this is bound to end in disaster. Think up a smaller storygame first, accomplish that, then if you still think you can really do something this grand, try it.

I agree here, use simple variables to make some of your choices react differently depending on events that change the variables, but making a combat system involves a huge amount of scripting.

For example, 1 swing of your sword in Dungeon Stompage runs a script over 700 lines long.

Pft, only 700 :P

Yeah, yeah. Cows vs. Aliens had over a million lines of script in it (because I was a total asshat), so I don't mind being scoffed for a measly 700.  ^v^

700? ... o.0 How on earth does one attack require that much code? (Then again, maybe I'm just not paying attention to how many lines of script I'm putting in, I dunno. It doesn't seem like it's anywhere near that much, though.)

That's a lot of scripts. Even if I'm making a storygame in modern-warfare RPG or US marines in the Middle East, I won't use that much of scripting.

xD ... >_>; Yeah, Killa's right. Don't do what I did. Start small.

I dunno. POF has stats and the coding for that is still pretty simple.

*shrug* Well, in all honesty, I think she should start however she pleases. I did. Still, I suppose it depends on the person, and it seems like a lot of people find scripts daunting at first, even simple ones.

Was Golad 1.0 all that complex? I always thought it was pretty simplistic, mostly use items and basic scripting.

Killa's advice was: "Think up a smaller storygame first, accomplish that, then if you still think you can really do something this grand, try it."

I was going to say that I didn't believe one's first game had to be small (in size) considering my first game was 8/8 length even in its first addition and was close to 1k in its final stages. So I wasn't even referring to scripting. GOLAD actually did use some advanced scripting, but that's irrelevant to my point.

It was 8/8 before the system changed. It wasnt that big either. :P It was a great game, yes, but it's nothing compared to what Angel was talking about. Nor was Killa talking about length, considering Angel's discussion was about combat scripting. :P

... Okay? The original version still would've been 8/8 because The Other World is the same size as the original version of GOLAD and it's 8/8. (And 2.0, being twice the size, is obviously also 8/8.) Killa actually was talking about length, too. His point was 'Overly ambitious, in length or scripting, is bound to end poorly.'

Edit: She also mentioned wanting to do quite a bit more than just battle scripts.

I have had some experience in scripting, and I wrote a game entirely from scripting once, however it was on a different website and the commands were different.

Make it the story of a brave penguinite and his struggle against strawberry pudding.
