The Old Kingdom trilogy (Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen) by Garth Nix is really good. The books are set in a world where there is a wall - one side is like early-20th century in terms of technology and culture, whereas on the other side (the Old Kingdom) technology doesn't work but magic does. The story revolves more or less around the Abhorsen, a sort of anti-necromancer (puts dead to rest). Nix has a really cool system for life and death too (eg. at times the protagonist will venture into death to hunt a villain or to put someone to rest).
A Song of Fire and Ice (A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings etc.) by George R. R. Martin is another good fantasy series. I'm guessing you know all about that since HBO started making Game of Thrones. I'd recommend watching the television series before reading the books, purely because there are so many characters and places that it gets confusing if you can't put faces to the names.
