Dust off a seat and discuss a good book here...you do read, right?

Recently I've been trying to stay off my pc and phone an hour before my bedtime. I've been wanting to replace that time with a book for me to read while in bed, so I'd be grateful for any recommendations or must reads.

Obligatory Watership Down recommendation.

I'm going to assume you've already read Tolkien.

The Joy Luck Club or The Good Earth if you'd like to embrace a different, less degenerate Asian culture.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy trilogy. (Trilogy only imo not a fan of 4 and 5, they came later and the tone feels off.)

P.G. Wodehouse is pretty silly and breezy and has Gower's stamp of approval, if you're wanting something really light while you're presumably tired.

Anything of the typical famous things by Charles Dickens or Rudyard Kipling.

Emily Dickinson collection. (Or Beowulf if that's too girly for you. Or The Ballad of the White Horse by G.K. Chesterton, pretty epic narrative poem about King Alfred.)

And then there's the HOLY BIBLE, you heathen reprobate.

I haven't read watership down, so I'll definitely read it. I did read Bens spin off of it so I feel like I have a gist of what I'll be getting myself into. I'll just see what others say too, if nothing else resonates as much I'll buy that one.

Any particular genre?

Not particularly! I like to think I'm pretty diverse on the things I can enjoy. My friend reccomended me Steppenwolfe already, and I feel like I'll either find it too slow, and dry or deeply spiritually resonant. I think my heart is in search of a story which has both that profoundness aswell as something easy, enjoyable and cinematic to read. I suppose I probably like sci-fi and fantasy stories the most. Something with a rich world (not always good) and complex decisions can drag me in.

Well, my current favorite book has to be Piranesi by Suzanna Clarke. I read it in one sitting.

Go in blind. It's pretty good.

If you ever want a compromise on the no screen thing (and if you can afford it), the Kindle Paperwhite is a really nice glare-free, water resistant e-reader that for me never has the typical eye strain. It's not trying to be a tablet, the focus is pretty much solely on giving the most comfortable reading experience possible.

But of course, Amazon sucks.

Check out my book lists in the Reading Corner.

I'm currently almost through the Farseer Trilogy, and it's definitely worth reading. It is written by a woman though, so be prepared for descriptions of garments and emotions. If I knew literary terms I'd tell you exactly how The Name of the Wind seems to pull from it. Since I don't, I'll just say they feel very similiar.

I quite enjoyed Stephen King's Misery. It's a horror though, so if you're not into that I'd recommend choosing something else.

Film adaptation was a disappointment though, they toned down the more gruesome parts of the book and left out a few things that made that specific part of the book so fun to read. Not a fan of how they changed the ending, the main character doesn't change whatsoever which cheapens everything that happens to him in my opinion.

If you end up liking Misery you'd probably like The Mist, also by Stephen King.

Lol.

At least he'll definitely be up for work on time this way. Maybe a bit lower functioning than normal, but nothing a few cups of coffee can't fix.
