Dust off a seat and discuss a good book here...you do read, right?

The Stars My Destination

A long while back, around the turn of the century, I read a "short" story (about 150-200 pages) in an old science fiction anthology; the book was from the early 60's. The story was entitled "Tiger! Tiger!"

It was perhaps the greatest science fiction story I have ever read. Maybe Enders Game is better, but maybe not. We'll call it a tie.

Anyway, I've since been obsessed with finding a copy of the thing, but have had no luck; I checked all the anthologies and everything and NOTHING. I was getting irritated by the whole ordeal. Had I imagined it? I couldn't have imagined it because this dude I used to work with lent me the book...

A few months back someone was talking about a Stephen King book where the term "jaunting" is used. This term, "jaunting" was all over the book I read and I assumed that it was the origin.  Needless to say I did a little wiki-research and read that he credited the term 'jaunt' to a book by Albert Bester called "The Stars My Destination". I Wiki'd The Stars... and found that it is an older story that used to be called Tiger! Tiger!

Yaaaaay! I was so excited I about shit my pants.

But I'm glad that I didn't shit my pants, and not just because that's gross;  but also because it would have been some premature pant-shitting. I searched tons of science fiction anthologies, even went to used book stores and libraries; but to no avail. I could not find it anywhere.

Then, yesterday; while I was at Barnes and Noble, I decided to check for Bester in the novels section. There it was on the shelf, published as a short novel. The Stars My Destination.

That time I did shit my pants. Clean up in the science fiction section.

If you haven't read it, go do so. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stars_My_Destination

Happened all the time, back in the day.  Especially to sci-fi and mystery stories.  Usually for marketing purposes.  Most often, title changes happen when a hardcover book comes out in paperback or a european story gets published in america.

Going to look this one up on Wikipedia. . .

Oh holy shit!  I just realized I read this story before!!!  I thought it was by Poul Anderson for some reason.  Crap.  I remember the whole synesthesia/burning man part.  It was in a collection of short stories, though, for sure.  And I remember the radioactive guy.  Wow.  So that's what that story was called.  Thanks dep.

So this whole thing totally reminded me of another sci-fi short story that I read when I was a kid, and I actually remembered the title: "Fondly Fahrenheit."  So I go to Wikipedia to look it up, and-- it's by Alfred Bester!!!

Clearly, the man was good.

He's also responsible for the "code" of the Green Lantern. He did some comic book work back in the day, helped to mold several DC characters.

I'm going to start looking for some short story collections of his, because I'm also reading a book called "The Demolished Man" that is really good so far.

I have a book club edition of that.    It was the only thing of his that I knew, till this thread.

Are there really any major sci-fi players any more?  It seems like, at least at the store where I work, all the sci-fi lately is series stuff, you know Star Wars and such?  Sci-fi has been melded to fantasy, and horror has been subsidized as either "dark fantasy" (which can also mean supernatural romance) or shoved into the generic "fiction" section.

Most of the big names in the sci-fi/fantasy genre seem to be much further along the fantasy spectrum, I mean.
