This was a great book.  It's the author's first novel, but hopefully he'll write more.

It takes place when Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union, and it's a mystery/thriller.  The main character realizes that there is a serial killer murdering children, but the official government position is that there is no crime in Russia, because the communist state is perfect.  He can't investigate without being accused of disloyalty and possibly sentenced to death.
