Well. Here's a thought: It's the first cartoon network show (that I'm aware of) which has had a very openly lesbian couple as two of the main characters. Just learned that today. I could've sworn Ruby was a dude, but episode 64 confirms Ruby's female and ... well, considering her relationship with Sapphire is emphasized even more than Steven's relationship with Connie, that's ... interesting. (It's out-right stated, it's sung about, they kiss each other, exc, and they apparently can't stand to not be fused except in extreme situations / arguments with each other.) The suggestive dancing during fusing already had the undertones, but ... O.o still, bold.

If Ruby is female though, I am now just going to assume all gems are female, which means that gender is totally irrelevant to their race--but even taking that technicality into account, I'm surprised I've never heard anyone even mention this, let alone make a big deal out of it.

I thought all gems were female, too.  Wasn't it a big deal that Steven wasn't?

Yeah , thought so to.

Well, fans seem to be split into four groups over this thing: "They're totally a lesbian couple." "No, no, they're not, gems have no gender." "No gender? Are you crazy? Ruby's totally a guy." "A couple? They're not a couple! They're like, brother and sister or something ... right?"

I've seen over 57 episodes, I don't remember them ever once explicitly saying all gems were female, so I just never thought about it until I saw that episode. Yeah, Rose, Garnet, Pearl, and Amethyst are the main (non-monster) gems that I'd seen for the longest time, but I just figured that was just because they cut themselves off from gem society and were the only known survivors... (er, other than Lapis.) Steven's existence being a big deal seemed to only be because he was both a human and a gem, I don't remember anyone talking about his gender at all, really.

I don't know if anyone has told you this before but the gems are genderless or sexless whatever you call it they're not female nor male or both their nothing although it is a refefernece to LBGT community

There is a vast difference between "sexless" and "genderless" for one thing, also, you're necro-ing a very old thread, so frankly, it's likely that everyone who posted in here at that time either already has more information or no longer cares.

It was made by some of the same people, and there are fans who say it's better, but it depends on the person.

I've watched it before. It's pretty interesting, actually. The only complaint that I have is about Ruby and Sapphire.

First off, gems have no gender, which links to their ability to change physical form. They can appear to be male or female by tweaking their appearances. Remember, their physical forms are just an illusion. Ruby can just as easily by a guy.

Sapphire is shown to be a Cyclops, which I don't think is actually possible. All other gems have two eyes, just like the humans. But why does Sapphire have one eye? Ruby seems to have no problem with this, which I find strange. Sapphire also can control the cold...but don't sapphires come from the earth? The farther you go into the ground, the hotter it gets. But then again, sapphires are blue and so can be some types of ice.

Ruby and Sapphire are said that they are "in a relationship." But that doesn't mean they're romantically involved. What if they are related? Most people think that Steven Universe is bad because of the Ruby and Sapphire relationship factor, but I digress.

It is proven in the show that they kiss a lot, but what if that means that Sapphire is sharing "future vision" with Ruby? What if they are telepathically speaking/communicating? There is a lot we don't know.

For the most part, Rebecca Sugar (The creator of Steven Universe) has done a lot of plot twisting, writing, development, and some revealing to the public.

The thing I love most about this show is that the whole show has a meaning behind it...and it is all based on how Rebecca acted around her brother, Steven (yes, Steven), when they were young. That meant Amethyst, Garnet, Ruby, Sapphire, and Pearl were all one person! Steven Universeception!

But in all, I think Steven Universe is a pretty well done show.

It's like Adventure Time on crack, but without all that pesky "good writing" stuff getting in the way.

Either you haven't seen very much, or Adventure Time is better than I thought, or quite possibly, S.U. is just not your thing.
