Help with Texturing?

Alright. I just got through modeling a blaster pistol in Blender, and I'm about to start unwrapping all the little pieces and texturing them. Problem is, I really don't know how I want to color this thing.

Here is a rendering of the pistol. Here is another rendering of the same pistol, but from the back.

I know quite a few of you guys are really gifted when it comes to visual arts, but I'm not. What I want to know is, what colors/patterns should I use for each of the following parts:

  • Barrel
  • Handle
  • Barrel Holder
  • Cord
  • Sight
  • Trigger
  • Nut on back of barrel

I feel like the barrel should be a darker brownish color.

You should give the whole gun a rainbow pattern.

I think it would look cool with a Damascus barrel and mother-of-pearl grip.

Yes, but what about the other bits and pieces?

Well, a bronze nut and barrel holder would set off the barrel.  Maybe the cord could be an electric blue ... to make it a sort of a meld between past and future.  The trigger and sight I'd make dark (like blued steel) so they weren't as obvious to anyone but the wielder.

I may be wrong, though.  It might take a bit of experimentation to get the right combination.

I've done the cord, the nut, and the holder, all in the colors you suggested. However, I can't find any good tutorials on making damascus steel, mother of pearl, or blued steel textures.

Here are some sample images that I found:  blued steel, damascus, mother-of-pearl.

I'm not quite sure how I'll make any of those in GIMP or using Blender's material settings.

Sorry, but you've come to the well once too often.  ...but, there are some YouTube videos that show how.

I'm not familiar with that idiom. Have I pissed you off or just exhausted your knowledge on the subject? It's seems like it could go either way.

Yeah, it's kind of an old saying.  I've heard a lot of old timer's use it and always thought it was funny.  I always thought they meant well of knowledge, but who knows...

Well, I got the image that I was some kind of vagrant going between cities and outstaying his welcome by drinking everyone's well water.

There are probably laws against that down in Florida.  (In reference to a news story that I saw a day or two ago.)

The best way to make blued steel, I guess, is to take a picture of a sheet of normal steel with the light temp turned way down before or after it's taken...

Not sure how high sci-fi of a look you're going for, but out of personal taste...

I think the handle would look nice if it were wooden. Preferably a darker wood, and laminated. Maybe wooden grips on a gunmetal handle, if you can pull it off. The barrel holder (assuming that's the clitellum-looking tube around the gun barrel itself) should also be laminated wood with brass  around the edges, with brass rivets just to look fancy.

The barrel, sight and trigger should be plain gunmetal black. If everything looked fancy, that'd just be clashy and it would look a bit homosexual.

The cord should be a shining/reflective, fluorescent gold or brass, something that looks like hot, glowing conducting a load of deadly laser charges and shit. The nut should be a dark red, blue, or some other color that looks cool and/or regal with bright yellow next to it.

Okay, here are my latest renderings:

I borrowed from both of your suggestions; I'm not sure how well the...blend...went. The handle, barrel, and trigger have been unwrapped and "properly" textured. The nut, sight, holder, and cord only have Blender materials. Further feedback and suggestions will be well appreciated.
