Heh, I actually owned that one. It was part of the Crimson Crystal books which used a red strip plastic gimmick to decode the big blots of red ink code. Never owned any more from that series and the gimmick didn't really add anything to the adventure.
If we're talking about actual physical books, I preferred the Fighting Fantasy books in general. The Golden Dragon Fantasy books were probably the next best substitute in similarity to those.
As far as the modern stuff, I prefer the Tin Man Games "Gamebook Adventure Series" which are pretty detailed in the world's lore as well as being well written along with being a good challenge. (There are 12 in the series so far)
Plus the company also does digital remakes of the old Fighting Fantasy books.
