A place to sit back, hang out, and make monkey noises about anything you'd like.

A review of Canada

So I've been in Canada the past 4 days, and I thought I would write a review. Please note that this is restricted to Vancouver BC, not the whole of Canada.

First, I'll list off a couple of observations I have no opinion on.

  • Lots of diversity
  • Climate similar to Washington
  • A lot of Native art

Now some pros:

  • Less big companies, only one I've seen more than 5 locations of is Starbucks
  • People are nice
  • Fun to be in a different country
  • Saw a Irish dude playing a harmonica and making puppets dance for  change

And the cons:

  • Hipsters everywhere
  • Money is worth less
  • Apparrently its illegal to perform on the streets for money without a permit
  • Graffiti is organized by the city government. I hate graffiti.
  • People seem boring
  • Fast food is sparse, mostly hipster food (Veagan sandwiches, espresso, veagan soup, etc.)
  • A lot of panhandlers
  • Streets are dirty
  • Everything is crowded
  • The air smells wonky
  • Weed  store on every other block
  • About 1 in ten pedestrians smell strongly of weed
  • Candy is different, especially Kit-Kats...
  • The  internet service in the hotel is crappy

Overall though, Canada is pretty cool. Not as cool as the U.S., but it's alright.

But didn't you say there is lots of diversity? You state after people seem boring.

Yeah...

Vancouver isn't a good representation of Canada. Basically everything related to weed/hipster/hobos is almost exclusively in Vancouver. I mean other places have hobos, but Vancouver is pretty bad with their situation (climate is nice so they tend to migrate there).

I'd like to offer a differing viewpoint.  Visited Vancouver last year.

The food was great.  We were just talking Saturday about what a great trip Vancouver was from a restaurant perspective.

Don't recall the air being particularly noticeable.

Lots of great nature.  Beaches & mountains in proximity.

People very nice, I agree.  Saw a field trip or day camp or something of like, first graders looking at tiny crabs on the beach, jumped off the sea wall to check it out.  Little kid spent 15 minutes explaining stuff about the crabs to me.  Wife was like "I cannot believe those chaperones didn't at least ask you who you were or what you were doing"

Streets were not dirty at all.  In fact, saw a woman stop a total stranger who had dropped a straw wrapper & tell her "aren't you going to pick that up?!"  Recycling bins everywhere.

Kitkats are safe for peanut allergy in Canada. Also, lots of things make kitkats go weird.  Like when they're in the leftover Halloween candy, they taste wrong after a week or so.

Our hotel had spiffy wifi.

Some parts of Vancouver are pretty bad. You were likely in the nicer areas.

But yeah, the west coast has some great nature.

I'm assuming it was a nicer area, as the hotel was ludicrously expensive.

The hipsters reminded me of Ann Arbor. XD

The only reason I see of going to canada is to bug out if shit hits the fan, or just relax in the woods and get lost, Forget about the cities.

Or if Trump becomes president. Hey, at least the Canadian prime minister is pretty good-looking.

Forgot to mention the stupid crosswalk guy. I don't know if it is exclusive to Canada, but it really bugs me. Don't ask why this bugs me, I don't even know why myself.

Picture.

Maybe because the figure seems stiff and robotic?
