Fallout Season 2
A little late on this one as well, but I waited until all the episodes were out before watching it all.
So as much as I saw a whole bunch of bitching online about the season, once again I have to say I really didn’t mind it. I probably liked it just as much as the first season really.
I might’ve even liked it a bit better since there’s slightly less Brotherhood shit in it and the BOS stuff there was in there I didn’t mind. Focused more on Lucy and the Ghoul than the BOS dude which again is why I liked it a bit more.
It of course continues to follow the adventures of Lucy trying to find her dad, the Ghoul trying to find his family and the BOS guy, I dunno doing some shit in the BOS (Yeah I don’t give a shit about his character)
I will say I sort of liked that they just resolved the BOS thing with there now being several factions of the organization and none of them seem to really follow what they were originally about. That’s at least sort of in line with how the faction has been fucked around with over the years. I’m going to guess that Bethesda just made them the winners of the Fallout 4 ending since they continue to mention the Commonwealth and it being unified under them. Also the Prydiwyn is still around (And a shitload of other airships apparently now)
So the main bitching is that Bethesda completely horse fucked New Vegas and all the lore. Todd Howard is determined to destroy anything Fallout related that Bethesda didn’t directly create. New Vegas and the surrounding area is pretty well destroyed and in worse condition in the show than whatever the Courier 6 did in the game (Barring maybe a genocide run)
And yeah I can sort of see that argument. They did destroy Shady Sands and practically the NCR, though that organization does still seem to be around in some form based on what you see in season 2. It sort of doesn’t make sense the NCR would be completely gone just because Shady Sands got nuked. Even if it broke apart, there’d be some remnant of it around for awhile given how big it actually was. Toddler is petty and always hated that New Vegas was a better game than the two Fallout games Bethesda vomited up.
However, Bethesda and Todd have been horse fucking the lore and the setting for awhile now, so whatever they do isn’t too surprising and I can’t really rage about it. I mean it’s been retarded since they thought it was a great idea to have your character drink out of the toilet bowls in Fallout 3 and turn the BOS into a bunch of dumb white knights and overly jerk off to the faction in general.
Personally I really don’t even think they did too much damage here, though as I’ve said before, I’ve never been a big NCR fan either so I didn’t give a shit that it’s seemingly a failed state now.
As for New Vegas being fucked up, well that’s a no win situation. Arguably even having the season set there was going to piss off the fanboys. “Hey that’s not how I left New Vegas when I played through it!”
Well unfortunately you don’t own the IP, so you can’t declare exactly what’s canon, so your playthrough is just an incredible simulation!
The official statement is they did it in such a way that any of the 4 faction endings could’ve been canon, but eh…given the state that you see NV in the show, it’s pretty obvious that isn’t quite the case.
First off, it’s apparent that the Legion definitely didn’t win. If they had, they definitely would’ve still had a major presence in NV even if Caesar had died. As it stands in the show, they’re not much better off than the NCR and fighting a civil war. Granted they might’ve been doing that anyway, but like I said if they had control over NV proper, there would’ve at least been some Legion faction settled there.
House probably didn’t win either since he’s mostly offline in the show. There’s no army of securitrons keeping order and the strip is fucked. All of which mean he got offed or at least his body did, but this is Fallout and this is also House so yeah I can buy that he just had ANOTHER back up plan to keep himself alive as just a digital entity in the case of body death.
So that leaves the NCR who might’ve won, but it states then Shady Sands got nuked shortly after the Battle of Hoover Dam so that’s why the NCR slowly lost control of the territory since they didn’t really have any supplies or back up as the years went on. Still feels like though that if they had properly won though, there would still be a bigger NCR presence there on some level rather than just a few soldiers. Then again I suppose a lot of years have passed.
Of course the other option is Yes Man and that’s honestly most likely seeing as the Courier probably got bored running the place, fucked off and the place just fell into chaos as the securitrons once again struggled to maintain any sort of long term order.
In any case, it doesn’t matter too much I suppose other than pointless fun geekery to try to determine what’s canon and what isn’t. (Khans are still around in the show for example so I guess they didn’t get wiped in the game)
On a side note, I’ve actually never really gotten too much into the hatred for “cutting off the branches” with things. I actually see bitching about this in the IF world a lot. “You made a sequel and now none of my choices matter! I’m a whining faggot waahhhhh!” (Yeah seen a lot of Cogites bitch like that)
If you make something with multiple endings and then make a sequel, I mean on some level one of those endings is going to have to be the “true one” unless you do something like setting it so far in the future and you just explain it away like “Oh the records from that time are pretty spotty” or something similar.
I mean I get it on some level that maybe the ending you had you preferred more than the one that ends up being canon, but I mean that’s the breaks.
Hell, I’d use the example of the old game Infamous. That had binary good/evil endings and both times the developers picked the good ending which I thought was dumb because why the fuck call it “Infamous” if you were going to just do a boring good guy play through. And yeah I get that they did it because they went by most of the people doing good guy play throughs. But as they say the people are retarded.
Should’ve stuck with the more interesting evil ending in that franchise, but again I don’t own it so it is what it is, can’t bother raging about it.
Anyway I’ve probably talked less about the actual show than game branching and canon shit, but if you liked the first season, you’ll probably like this one.
