A horror story

Well, I recently watched Markiplier play the game "Calm Time" and I really liked it. Honestly, the idea of playing a killer inspired me to make a story, and I will. Here's the first draft of the first page, tell me what you guys think:

Living in isolation is a wonderful thing. If I lived in the city, people would hear the screams of my victims, but not here. I inherited my home from my father, who hung himself in the master bedroom, and my mother who was run over by a drunkard. I shared the house with my younger sister, until one night we got into an argument. I still haven't taken her body down from the wall in the basement.

But, I still haven't stopped killing people. When I force the knife into their chests and rip out the chunks of gore, and the blood seeps from the knife into my hand, I get a thrill. And I love it. It's been 7 years, and the body count has only risen. I forgot how many people I've killed, probably around 52, maybe more, maybe less. But I know the bodies won't stop coming. Tonight I plan on having a party. Not one of the guests will leave tonight.

I own 'Calm Time' and enjoy it (after all I love indie games) but this just seems cliche. In Calm Time there was subtle hints at your doings, but you just outright blurted that you are a murderer. For example, the beginning text is repeated when you beat the game, but is more morbid when you think about it in contrast to being a killer.

Also, the whole point of Calm Time was to see through the eyes of a murderer, immersing the player. I'm not sure how you would do this through text, unless you were very descriptive.

Eh, flat out telling the player you're a killer is better than hinting at it, IMHO. Though hinting at it could make the story lean towards psychological horror than regular slasher based horror. (Which is what I'm aiming for)

This is basically Calm Time.

Actually, I forgot to say I was trying to recreate the game in text, not make a story based off the concept.

Well then that's different. If you wanted to recreate Calm Time I think you would need permission from the author...

I doubt it. He wouldn't be claiming to own it...

Besides, like you said, I'm not claiming to own it, and I put it under fan-fiction and gave it the horror tag, rather than putting it in horror.

Before I figured out a way to post on the forums, I used to stalk, and I found this one thread where Sethaniel was talking about how some dude created 'Snow' as a video game. Despite claiming not to own it, it was still bad.

If this is bad, then it's bad. It appears that you're trying to discourage me from making this.

EDIT: And can you give me that thread? I want to see that video game.

I'm not trying to discourage you at all, in fact I want to see this happen. Never mind, I guess.

Seth got the game taken down, but I remember it was on kongregate.com . I don't remember the thread (as this was months back) but I think it was a derailment when someone brought up kongregate.

Let's invite the man himself here. @Sethaniel.

I probably screwed it up with the period, and since you can't edit in tags...

You can't steal someone else's story.

It does not matter if you don't claim to own it, or if you give the author credit.

Copyright law says you cannot reprint, rework, repurpose, etc. any authors work without their permission.

(the game in question was my exact words/game, just remade in flash, btw.)

When I'm not at work, I'll link to the post where it's explained.

If you're lazy, here's my post:

Realistically, no one is going to bug you about copyright for these games.  Personally, I've never seen or heard of any instance where an artist complained that their work was used without permission.

However, you are absolutely 100% wrong if you think that just because you're doing something for free, copyright laws don't apply to you.

It's also complete bs to claim that you're advertising his work for free by using it in your story, and therefore that makes it an equivalent exchange.

Copyright is not contingent upon profit or benefit.  You may not use another person's creation without their permission.  Period.

What you are describing are the conditions for using work under a Creative Commons license.  Most work is not Creative Commons, and it will specifically state if it is.  (it's the cc in a circle logo)

Creative Commons licenses use one or more of the following rules:

Attribution:  You must credit the original creator

Non-Commercial:  You cannot profit from a work utilizing the content

No Derivative Works:  You may not change or alter the content in any way

Share Alike: You may change, alter, or adapt the content, but any work created must also be distributed with a Share Alike license.  (In other words, you can't put a traditional copyright on your work if it uses any part of a Share Alike licensed work.)

If the creation in question is not Creative Commons (or public domain) you may not use it without the owner's permission.  Doesn't matter if you credit the owner, doesn't matter if your work is "a labour of love," doesn't matter if you think you're doing the owner a favor by providing a wider audience for his work.  You cannot use another person's creation without their permission.

Oh, it just appeared that you bringing up a bad video game based off a great story, you would be calling this a bad story based of a great game.

Also, I forgot, but I wanted to point this out -

There is a difference between recreation and fanfiction.

Fanfiction: Hunger games story involving similar plot but different characters

Recreation: Browser-based Doom

Oh, I suppose it could be a fanfic. You would play as the same guy in the game, but with different people at the party.

Yeah, forget this. I feel like this would flop majorly, and I already have enough stress on me, considering I have 2 stories I'm working on other than this.
