Bizarre combination concept

Someone just asked on Facebook if Death Note, among other series, would make a good Miyazaki film. >_> I want to see this.

I have no idea what bizarre baby would result from meshing mythical, heartfelt, childish whimsy and just-below-preachy-levels of respect for nature with a calculating supernatural serial killer and his Sherlockian rival, but I seriously do want to see it.

Is this one of those requests for someone to make a storygame? Lol

Yes...? No...?

In my personal experience, if you really want something done, you do it yourself. However, I've already got a ton of projects waiting for me and enough obligations IRL. I don't expect anyone to actually accept any project just from me asking, but I am curious to see if anyone else finds this as interesting as I do. (I'm assuming the answer is no, lol.)

Yeah, I thought you'd say as much about asking people to make storygames for you, haha. You strike me as not being the lazy sort and as you say, if you really wanted to do it you could probably do a much better job doing what you envisioned yourself.

The answer is indeed a no. I have my own storygame projects on the go currently, and I have more planned for the future. I think I'd feel weird writing someone else's story idea instead of my own anyway.

True.

Ah. I didn't mean purely interested in making it, I just meant interested period--but yeah, I can understand that. I've tried to finish a story for writer friends before. Couldn't do it.

The concept itself? I certainly think it could potentially be interesting, but it depends how it was handled. What format were you thinking? Anime? Storygame? Novel? Comics? Also, which sort of Miyazaki films were you thinking?

Well, ideally as an animated movie as per the original thought, but as I don't have a fortune handy and I can't draw worth a damn, if I actually made it myself, it'd be a storygame.

Which sort...? Depends. There are multiple ways this could go. Death Note and the films do share in supernatural elements and spirit beings. In contrast, Miyazaki's films have a hopeful outlook, and again, a more child-like whimsy to them, whereas Death Note was like watching a trainwreck--anyone who says they didn't see disaster coming and inescapably so from the very first episode ... either they're blind to foreshadowing or I call bullshit.

I have toyed with the idea of the Death Note being used in a storygame before, I just couldn't come up with a good way to go about it. I definitely didn't think of combining it with Miyazaki though.

I guess it would be more like Mononoke-hime?

But yeah- another stylistic mismatch is that Ghibli films often have large stretches with very little dialogue, and Death Note is basically all talking.

Yep. Kind of the beauty of it, I'd say. They'd balance each other out, in an odd sort of way--though again, dunno what would result from that.
