I always recommend checking out a few of the top rated stories and browsing the articles before diving into a project of your own, just to get an idea of the possibilities and the quality level readers are looking for. But either way, just a reminder that you're not in any rush to publish and so there's plenty of time to make sure your story is complete and polished and proofread to make a good first impression.

The writing workshop is a good place to get advice and feedback on a story in progress.
