Ratings skewed?

When you are the first person to rate a game, if you rate it badly or well, I think it skews the ratings because you've set up the baseline for the standard deviation. Can someone explain this? I hardly know what the standard deviation is.

standard deviation is a mathmatical term used in probability and statistics. the first example that i heard about this was a study done at Univ. of NC. UNC history majors were found to be the highest paid professions from a particular class that was studied. problem was that Michael Jordan was history major and he was making a crap load of money that had nothing to do with history. therefore, his "score" was considered to be an outlier. therefore, his score doesnt count. so its a matter of averages. if 20 people rate a game a 2, and 1 person gives it an 8, the 8 isnt going to change things. however, the caveat is that there needs to be a standard score of a 2 by a large number of people before that really takes effect... man, i dont know if thats clear at all. i hate math lol

what i think happens, is if you rate a game 1, and your the 1st person 2 play it any ratings beyond 4 are ignored because they are not close 2 1.

you can "think" what you want. point is, the system is working the way its supposed to. this has been discussed many times.
