Debate Section

I know this  is pretty far fetched, and would most likely take too much work, but it sounds like a cool idea to me.

I was thinking that maybe the all-knowing and powerful creators could make a section in the forums entitled Debate. In there people could post various controversial topics, a judging panel appointed, and teams formed. There could also be rules set up, which would be cool. I was thinking this during the nuclear power debate because it reminded me of so many other useless debates in the lounge. During these debates, both sides would argue with each other, but nothing would get done because chances are if you have researched and believe in something you are arguing for, its extremely hard to have your opinion on the matter swayed. I know this would be just as good as changing people's opinions as the lounge, but having a debate section would keep the lounge free from clutter, as well as have people informed on the proper way of debate and stimulating their minds  by having them research a particular topic, as well as having the judges way each side equally and giving their unbiased opinion on the matter.

I know this will most likely never succeed, but do any of you have thoughts on this?

I'm not sure I really like the 'judges' idea and that. but I would really like to see an extra forum section or two to eleviate some Lounge congestion. Mainly, Games for things like Mafia and Survivor, and a debate one for people to rant and argue with each other. It would be nice :)

that would encourage arguments and disagrements. pointless quarells accomplish nothing.

Besides how to debate properly, as well as how to think regarding situations which put you on the spot, which I think we all need to learn.

Zikara, the judges are there to keep the debates from having no clear victor, which makes them slightly less pointless.

Also, I don't think I mentioned this but I meant to. The teams would have certain cycles to go through, like in the National Forensics League. There would be opening statements, rebuttals, crossfires, summaries, final crossfires, and final statements. Of course we don't need to make it that way, but we could make them have a time limit to finish the debate, like "Here are the teams, you have three days before the judges announce their nominations for victor". 2/3 majority is the way I would do it.

This isnt a place for debates, though they do happen quite often, its a place for reading and writing.

Then why make the forums?

Debate Section

If the only purposes are reading and writing that is.

I definitely disagree with you on that. Debates promote thought and thought is definitely a good thing for all writers to engage in.

There is nothing wrong with them, its just i dont beleive they need to be encouraged.

I actually like this idea it would make sense out of some of the chaos on the forums.

that would definitly be a positive side effect.

To bad we are SOL when it comes to getting it implemented.

We know, cool. Usually it annoys me when Ugilick gets on your case about posts he doesn't think you should make, but I've actually been starting to notice it now. Especially with this 'Alexp isn't here to do anything for us' thing. That point has been gone over, and I don't really see why it needs to be brought up every time someone suggests something that would be good for the site.

Ive stepped out of line in doing that before I'll admit, but we had a chat over PM's and i think we are both going to work on it.

I don't like structured debates, so I don't like the idea of having a forum for debating with judges and deadlines and so on. I'm indifferent when it comes to splitting The Lounge into sections like forum games and debates etc. but I really don't think The Lounge is that cluttered at the moment.

Yea, compared to other forums it isn't cluttered at ALL. Just compared to our other sections. I've just been noticing lately that its diverged itself into subsections, almost. It doesn't really bother me the way it is though.
