Short story/riddle

This is sort of a short story and a riddle. I'll have a bold line in the middle saying that the next part is the answer, if you want to try solving it. I know there's a few flaws still but please leave me alone this is my best riddle.

Don't mind me pushing the italics down...

Once there was a dragon and a knight. They were like any other dragon and knight in any other story, so they fought to the death. But not over a princess, but an island. You see, they had both gotten stranded on a lone island and they were fighting over who got to live there as it was small and neither liked the other.

Eventually, they accepted reality and agreed to live on the island in harmony. There were 7 wells and a lake on the island that were the only sources of water. The 7th will was atop a mountain, and the dragon liked to brag about being the only one out of the two who could drink from and use it. The dragon always drank from the 7th well.

The other 6 wells were along the bottom, in a straight line going up the slope of the mountain until the sheer cliff stopped them. Atop the cliff is where the 7th is. The wells are in order from 1st to 6th, 6th being the closest to the 7th and 1st the farthest.

Now, let's pretend that the lake is 0. If you drink from a well than drink from a well or the lake that’s of a lower number, you die. However, it’s safe to go drink from a higher number or the same one. This resets, so it’s only for drinking two consecutive times.

Soon though, as they were knight and dragon, they could no longer stand the other’s presence. The dragon was quite fire for brains and only wanted to raze everything, but the knight was intelligent. He said,

“If we couldn’t fight to the death before, we can’t now. It was and will be an unwinnable battle by both sides that’ll drag out endlessly. No, one must best another in a different way. A thing of chance. We will drink from a well of our choice, or the lake, and put water in our cup from one of our choice. These do not have to be the same. The following morning, we will drink from the other’s cup and the survivor gets to live on the island for themselves with the other dead.”

“Sure, but I’ll definitely win.” The dragon roars.

The knight won, with the dragon dying. What did the dragon and knight drink, and what did they put in their cups?

The following is the answer.

The knight was smart and the dragon was not. The dragon, fond of his well, inaccessible to the knight, drank from the 7th well and took water from the 1st. The knight drank water from the lake knowing that no matter what he drank he would not die. He also took water from the lake, as the dragon needed to drink from anything but the lake to die. The dragon was killed, and the knight lived happily ever after on his island of conditionally poisoned water.

That's interesting, did you come up with this riddle?

Only partly. This is a slightly flawed version of the original of a carrot and a cake. The original was a bit weird. And someone else had the knight, dragon, and wells idea and I put a thinking factor into it.
