Having recently become a more active user of CYS and chronic forum lurker, I have noticed the rather unique and creative profile images of users on this site. There appears to be a particular culture here that is different to most contemporary online spaces -- there are no images of people's real faces, and most images seem to be charmingly amateur pieces of digital artwork rather than recognizable characters or symbols.
And so my question is -- what's the story behind your profile image? Are there any legitimate origins of this trend?
I will be using responses as inspiration for my own profile image which I intend to change :)
AMATEUR!!
(My username/sona is from a Dokken song.)
Forgive me for the poor choice of words! I meant it as a compliment, honestly; perhaps I should have said "naive", in contrast to the overly polished images we're fed in the current age of AI and the internet. There are some incredibly drawn profile images here, yours included.
Yes, English is my first language. You're right, those would probably be better words within the context of the sentence I wrote in my original post. When I said "naive" I was more referring to the subgenre of visual art.
Wikipedia's definition: "Naïve art is usually defined as visual art that is created by a person who lacks the formal education and training that a professional artist undergoes. Naïve artists are aware of "fine art" conventions such as graphical perspective and compositional conventions, but are unable to fully use them, or choose not to."
I'm not an art expert by any means, and I don't mean to discredit anyone. Just clarifying where I was coming from with my statement.
She hasn't drawn me anything in my many likenesses, so that remains to be seen.
It was peak cinema.
You sort of have to seek out websites dedicated to old fantasy/scifi art to rip off the non AI slop stuff.
Usually it's various shit from the 60s-80s. Magazine covers, old paperback covers, game boxes, movie posters, VHS boxes, even a few album covers.

Lot of pics (More than just the 70s) and a lot of links to other places with more pics, along with the names of specific artists in case you see a pic you like and can easily look up the artist for more of the same.
