Private Messages

By: JJJ-thebanisher

Ok, so we have done two articles now.  I really am hoping that these are helping rookies.  Ok, this is the subject of Private Messages.  Private messages can be and are often shortened to PM so I could say something like.

“Alright, I’ll go PM The-Amazing-one-and-only Alexp for instance.”  PM’s are really useful.  I would say that myself and Metsrock are the biggest PM’ers on the site.  Now don’t quote me on that because there is no way to tell how much someone else has PM’ed.  However, there is a difference of Good PM’ing and Bad PM’ing.  Ok so here is an example:

“There’s a certain undisclosed member whose pestering me practically everyday about how he, or she, but probably he is having troubles in this or that, or being so happy, or having snot on his face or being attracted to someone or just blabbering on or talking about sports.  AND IT IS SOOOOO ANNOYING! Ask “Solostrike” what I mean, he’ll know what I’m Talking about.  But a Good PM would be something like this:

“Hey Solostrike, Its JJJ I’m just PM’ing you to tell you my new games out” This is a good PM, and is always acceptable.  Or if you want to PM an Admin (The-Amazing-One-And-Only Alexp, The infamous-March5th00  or The warrior spirit who is Chocobot.)  to ask for assistance, suggest something, etc… They are usually all ears!

Don’t get me wrong, its perfectly ok to PM people to just chat.  Solostrike, and I always do that. Fleshnblood_78 (Nate) and I often Chat.  My favourite PM I ever had was from The warrior Spirit who is Chocobot!  I don’t mind at all, but you should always know if your bugging the person.  My way of doing this is telling them to tell me to shut up if I’m annoying.  This gets the job done and it also eases the mood to casual!

Ok, now you probably want to know how to send a PM.  Its really simple, there are two ways.

Way 1

I.                    Go to my Stuff

II.                 Click on Messages

III.               Compose new message

IV.              Put in the username of the person you want to PM, add a subject and type your message.

Way 2

I.                    Find the users Username anywhere on the site

II.                 Click on it.

III.               Find the Send Message link which is under the stats part of the page.

IV.              Put in a subject and type your message.

Made for the Help file to help The-Amazing-One-And-Only Alexp!  Goodnight folks.

ARTICLES, ALEXP PLEASE READ.

Good articles but the spacing is to long. I finished what I could in Jepordy (1 cryptode question) and I still have time. I have advanced game features. JJJ has community features. I don;t want anymore that 100 points for my descriptive articles.

Finally, I have a chance to sit down and write a comment. First thing, don't worry about the spacing -- that is a bug on my end and it will be fixed soon.

The first impression I get when reading your articles is that you didn't spend a whole lot of time working on them. That is not meant to be offensive, so please don't take it that way. But, it's evident in the writing (that, and how many you've posted ;-)); you know how the quality of writing changes when you do a PM versus a forum post, or a game? Articles need to be top quality writing, since this is what newbies will be reading. They need a good impression of the site.

Also consider that an article is worth 50 points -- 1/2 of a featured game. I don't know if solostrike posted his article on the ADV Editor, but that is right on target. Well written, easy to follow, and conclusive.

Now, on to this article in particular. I like how you've addressed some key points:
 - HOW to send a PM
 - what PM is
 - Good vs Bad

However, all except the first one (how to) aren't conclusive enough.

Another point, newbies really aren't going to know the members yet, so yo uwant to avoid making them feel like they're not part of the club. When you mention all these other guys names, it kinda makes it feel a bit exlusive. You want to be writing to the newbie, in a welcoming kinda way.

here are some additional points to get across:
 - what you can, and when to use them for (still not sure by reading the article)
 - forums vs PMs (when to carry it as a PM, when to use forum)
 - what do you do if someone is bothering you (Answer: ask to stop, ignore, tell admin)
 - if an "innapropriate" PM is found (spam, soliciting name.password, etc), what to do
 - PM Ettiqute (you've started that with good vs bad, but you should expand on that)
 - why you get PMs from cysid, and who is cysid
 - how to disable PM, why you would want to disable

etc. Don't know if that's helpful, but I hope you get the idea. I think it's a great start, but it definitely needs some work.

Comment on my 3 articles. They range from common buttons to things that people don't like when playing games to finally making the game (Not Creating It though)
